I'm in my 40’s, and a day one adopter of PSVR. I’ve been fortunate enough that my wife loves watching me play NMS, so we were both excited about the update. I wasn’t sure I was going to try the VR portion since she likes to watch, but I gave it a go. Now it’ll be difficult to go back to playing it any other way.

I like to think of myself as a connoisseur of VR. I've played Skyrim to Blade and Sorcery, GORN to Orbus, Pavlov to Beat Saber, Superhot to Sairento, and everything in between.

First of all, it's by far the best VR port out there - it's not "no man's sky but with a bigger field of view and it looks 3D but you have a giant headset on your face" it's "you feel like a fuckin pilot flying through the sky doing a whole bunch of cool ass shit"

It might not be perfectly optimized, and there's a few bugs (water looks janky sometimes, I float a few feet above my seat in my ship so I have to grab my waist to control it, etc) but nothing game breaking so far. I've played it for 2 hours straight, and while that may not seem like much it's crazy for me because I have to fight my horrible out of shape body just to keep playing.

The one suggestion I might have is an option to glue the HUD to your screen. Right now, the HUD is floating about 5 feet in front of you and you have to physically turn your head to look at the values, and often times they clip through creatures and terrain. What I'm suggesting is that it could be more like an actual real life hud, it moves with your head like you're actually wearing a space suit helmet that projects important data on the inside of it, almost like you're wearing those google glasses that everyone forgot about.

Anyways, I'd write more but I'm going to go play it more. If you're holding out on playing it, if you're considering getting a headset for this game alone, obviously do your research so you don't spend thousands of dollars but DO IT.

I thought NMS + VR would be a disaster. Instead I'd rank it as simply the best VR game I've played and Stormlands gonna have some competition.

Does anyone else find mining unreasonably fun in VR? The minigame of keeping the mining laser red, the geodes/crystals, and the increased inventory space already had me mining much more than before but VR has made me addicted! I'm not even running much anymore because I can't help but shoot my laser at every object I come across. It's a good thing they decreased the amount of sentinels because I'd have their entire armada coming after me by now. Terrain manipulating is awesome in VR as well, the terrain tessellation is gorgeous and I love looking down into the giant hole I made after mining out some resources.

SECOND best is just putting your ship in cruise control (the thrust control stays put) and looking out the windows and marveling at being INSIDE the ship you’ve only imagined looking out of. It’s so damn freaky.

NMS in VR is a different game — a more contemplative,slower-paced, and stranger game — than what has come before.

Today I finally got home. Bought a used VR headset yesterday to play No Man's Sky. After reading the experiences on this subreddit I was expecting to be dissapointed in the graphical quality. But man... yes it is a little blurry (expected worse though) but it is absolutely epic and a revolutionairy gaming experience. I am blown away by how smooth it plays and the possibilities the VR headset has given the game. The holographic menus are top notch. This has been (and will continue to be) one of the most epic gaming experiences I have had in a long time.

The flight motion controlls are a little too sensitive, but cool anyway.

Hello Games have won my respect. They made this experience possible.

You can take out whatever you'd spend on lighthouses if you're considering a hybrid setup for Rift FBT, and if your Rift is still in good enough shape to sell, you could take a little more off the upgrade cost from that too.

As long as your Vive trackers have blue buttons on them, then they will be compatible with 2.0 lighthouses.

In general, do what you want, refuse to do what you don't want to do, and enjoy yourself. I guess you'd become a bit antisocial if you'd run away from headpats, but people respond to vrchat freedom of expression in many different ways and i'm pretty sure no one minds unusual reactions.

Rift FBT doesn't exist, rift can track one extra controller so you could use it for hip tracking, but oculus won't send the data about third controller to openvr so even that won't work for you. As far as i've seen on other people in game, mixed setups range from pretty much flawless to "my hips are moving on their own" galore, depending on how well you'll pull it off. In general:

>vive uses beam of infrared as a medium to send the beam that's received by your device
so certain issues are unavoidable. I'm not speaking from personal experience because i'm using even weirder FBT than people usually do, but as far as nerd talk goes, i don't think it's possible for rift+vive pucks to be absolutely flawless simply because of technology those devices are running on. Still, i've seen people with very convincing rift+vive pucks setups, so it's not a bad idea at all. If i'd have to buy a headset+fbt now, i'd save for index, but if i'd have a rift already, i'd definitely give hybrid setup a go.

Vivecraft is a free mod for the java edition of the game. It adds some VR interaction like bows and climbing, plus teleport movement if you can't deal with regular locomotion. Otherwise it's just Minecraft. Most of the autism mods are compatible too, though if they're menu heavy, VR obviously doesn't add much.

The windows 10 rewrite of Minecraft also supports VR apparently, but I've never bothered to try it. No mods, so not a lot of incentive to try.

Things have changed since the last nms beta patch. I'm testing on a stormy planet with lots going on right next to activity on the map to make sure settings are valid. I'll provide more screenshots.

**The app now needs to stay in focus for the best performance. It needs to be on top. Nothing else can be on top. Disable overlays if you're using them, like ovrdrop or ovr toolkit.**

DISABLE GAME MODE IN WINDOWS 10. You can find it in the start menu by typing "game mode". Mine was already off and I didn't realize you guys might need to know that! - This is universally good for vr since it uses a lot of background processes, I've found. as always, if you find it worse turn it back on.

you should still do the cpu changes in the config files (try 4high and 2low if the game doesn't load fast)

still do the "high dpi" override on NMS.exe

still do the nvidia control panel overrides for NMS.exe, but I'm adding new two: turn off threaded optimization "auto". Set it to off instead. Set the in game framerate on the video tab to UNDER your desktop HZ but over your hmd if you have gsync/144 hz adaptive sync, or max it. I just set mine to 160 now. Consider playing with your adaptive sync/gsync settings.

I recommend turning on fxaa now, either in control panel or in the game. Both work. Leave TXAA off unless you find it sharper/clearer. It's blurry for most people.

Anistropy 16x all day every day. Yay.

HBAO standard looks great too, no real noticeable difference in perf for me
steamvr: disable motion smoothing, manual hmd resolution from 100-200% or whatever keeps you out of reprojection.

Not sure how much this will help (or hell, it may have been posted a thousand times) but for anyone struggling to make a ton of money in No Man's Sky, follow these simple steps:

1. Get the terrain manipulator upgrade for the multi-tool.
2. Find a planet with an "Ancient Bural site" trait and scour the globe finding every last one you can.
3. Dig up those4 ancient bones and sell them.

I farmed for 2 hours and I'm up to 16 million units. Once I can find a ship with a bigger cargo hold, I'm going to be able to haul so many fucking bones.

when doing a first person camera movement that's tied to an in-world model and was curious if anyone's tried to go into a very detailed movement scheme that isn't just gliding around everywhere (with or without reduced FOV) or teleporting. You see all this care put into 3d models in third person games to make the turning and movement look 'realistic' (looking at you AssCreed) but not a lot of care for VR camera movement in that vein.

The best approximation is doing something with arm swinging or walking in place to drive there movement of the character rig. E.g gorn's default movement mode, natural locomotion. Basically to get your irl body doing as close to actual walking as possible. If you tried to bob the camera around like flat games it'd just be disorienting.

If you have enough space you can try openvr advanced setting's redirected walking mode. It tries to rotate the virtual world around so you can keep walking in circles irl while walking straight in game.

Finally got NMS running good on Index. It was trying with my Rift-S that helped me figure it our. it ran so much smoother even with SS to the same level I had the Index at. Turns out its because Rift-S is native 80Hz which is what my average stable fps was according to SteamVR's frame timing.

On Index I was still in 144hz mode so it was forcing it to always reproject frames. Even 90hz was still having issues. Drop to 80hz and all stable and smooth.

I'm running all on ultra except shadows which are on high.

HBAO standard(high didn't seem to hit fps but looked wrong)

Super-sampling 1.4

System is i7-8700k and 2080ti

Speaking of pic related, my god did Hello Games shit the bed with VR support. In game my hands feel like sticks and there's no thumb or forefinger support for anyone using Rift S. The UI just floats in the same place regardless of where you are and the spaceship controls are really slippery. Plus the performance is jittery as fuck.
