It's still probably the better deal for Insomniac, otherwise they wouldn't have taken it. The reality is that these games wouldn't sell enough units at this point to make back a justifiable profit, if there even would be. So Insomniac still likes money. As for Oculus, they have always sought for ways to make their store support other headsets as evidenced by the History of the Future book, but it was complicated and they had to delay and inevitably scrap their Vive hack. Now they're just co-developing OpenXR. Games made before OpenXR however will likely be unsupported unless they port it. So in the end, Oculus also like money, but they are willing to wait a longer period of time to see the ROI.

Turns out I don't have that controller since I gave it to a sibling at some point.

It's a mess, they have a lot to fix if they think people will pay for it. Their IK is ass, two handed weapons completely misaligned, you can't drop anything or it will clip through the floor, the chest rig always feels too close to your face and the base is still empty. It just feels too early even for early access, like they're still working out some of the core mechanics.

A shame because the atmosphere at night is great, it gets very dark but you always have the radius lit up ominously in the distance. The backpack is novel with being able to alter the positioning of items in there and having the tools on your chest rig snap back after use is nice.

It's not really so different in the end, they're all doing it for money while hopefully having a bit of fun doing it. That's the goal, but the approach is different. Facebook started out on VR in an initial state with no infrastructure or platform for being a digital games and apps marketplace on PC. Valve started out on VR with infrastructure/platform in place for being a digital marketplace on PC, and was already the market leader there. Therefore, to get to the same state, Facebook needs to take a different approach. Valve saw this, and took the complement. I mean, that's consistent with what I said though? It has already been confirmed from multiple sources that Valve did not treat their VR team well before the Facebook acquisition. It's a matter of risk on why their board felt that way, indeed. I will add to that, that it's also a matter that due to the company structure where employees just do what they want, no one was cooperating with the VR team, because they didn't want to do it. You can read about that in The History of the Future. Abrash, his team, and VR, were simply just not fitting in with the rest of the culture at Valve.

But yes, I don't think many people were predicting Facebook would invest so much in the gaming aspect. Valve was mostly still looking at it from a hardware perspective.

As for whether the gaming focus was right, they didn't really have a choice and I believe that decision making process is touched upon in The History of the Future too. And really, their investment into content is for the long term as well. The thing about their exclusives is that they're meant to be a slow ramp. Rubin has said that they are investing in content only to the point at which any one title couldn't be supported by the market. At the time, that was a handful of 5-10 hours titles. Now it's 20-40 hours of content per game assuming those after Asgard's Wrath keeps it up. So they are slowly building things up. So I'm not sure if Facebook owning at least 50% of the PC VR market share is really that bad for what they had accomplished in content. Before Asgard's Wrath, there really wasn't all that much attractive software on their store, not so much that someone would be too wooed over. Now that's starting to change slightly, but it's going to become unrelated after OpenXR is widely adopted.

ALRIGHT ANONS, here is the deal for Friday Night Gaming. Since there is a vested interest in Rec room and Pavlov, we can do both tonight. Since people make the mistake of getting too sweaty in pavlov, lets keep it to at least an hour to limit any casualties of war, autism bouts.

Pavlov is going to be broken up as the first part of tonight, considering the timeframe, we are going to start 7:30pm PST 10:30 EST. I was intending for this to be a noob friendly time, but we all know the experienced players will drop by anyway. Most have agreed to drink, as a friendly handicap.
