So let's say full dive is being worked on, but before all the health hazards and certifications are met, it's at least 5 years of closed beta-testing.
Because it's quite a milestone, there's a lot of money in it and interest. You're invited to the beta-testing. Quick calculations show that if you treat it like your day job, submit your mental states during play you can probably retire from work after those 5 years, and live with your life standards before the beta testing.
It quickly turns out you can multiply the ammount of money you make, however, if you put yourself in high-stress, painful situations. You'd still have to live your life outside of deep-dive. For some reason sleep and deep-dive wouldn't be compatible and you'd have to be well-rested for deep-dive to not shatter and "wake you up". If you treated it like your day job you'd essentially be comatose for 8 hours on top of needing to sleep this much. The most impressive part for me was when the player was rifling through the shelf for ammo. If they can consistently make the world that interactable and physical, that will add a lot to immersion. Even back in half life 2 when physics were new I had a ton of fun playing with physics props.

I jumped from cv1 to index. It's marginal. The index headset itself is definitely better, the index controllers are definitely worse, I really miss Oculus dash, but I don't miss having 3 USB ports tied up with sensors.

I'd say it comes down to how good the rest of your pc hardware is. If you don't have at least a 1070ti/i7 I think you'd be better off upgrading your parts rather than the index, and save up for the true next gen (or when the index inevitably drops in price)
