I just really want a way to play DnD over VR. I love playing in person, so DnD over the internet like roll20 is super lame and I lose interest.

So I wish there was some functioning way to play DnD with VR - like, you can just sit around a table in VR; obviously your avatar being your character. I think it could definitely work in VR, but it would need to tweaked for each person so it works for everyone. Imagine playing a game like Contractors, but each person commands a unit of bots. You could give them simple commands and use gestures to supplement those commands. If you could customize your own unit it would be a blast.

If you try to focus on anything that's virtually closer than than about 2 meters, your eyes will try to refocus closer, even though the screen of the headset is fixed 2 meters away (optically by the lenses). Theoretically, if they could have pulled off the world-scale meme and made it work for everyone somehow, having the whole face be a touch pad would be better, as it both gives us better thumb control in-game to make gestures as well as lets us do the pinch grab in a much more natural way. Whereas we sometimes have to grip our whole hand or only press the trigger to grab things like arrows, with a touch pad, you'd have to press down on your thumb and index fingers at the same time to initiate it, and it would actually feel like a pinch grab. One of the coolest things about Touch initially versus the Vive wands was how natural it was to just use your hands almost like your real hands. Should I put my money toward a space sim setup for Elite Dangerous, or a driving sim setup for Assetto Corza?

I know it's super opinion based and kind of a dumb question, but I'm wondering what I'd get more fun out of, assuming I like both equally. I love how deep E:D gets, and even something as simple as space trucking seems fun enough, but I also love the idea of racing around tracks and with other players in a racing sim.


I don't own a hotas, nor do I own any racing sim stuff. Sim racing seems way more expensive, since i'd want pedals and a shifter to go with a force feedback wheel, where as with E:D, I can just grab a t16000m throttle and stick for a little over $100 and call it a day.

Anyone ever buy used sim peripherals over craigslist? Is it something worth checking into?

OG Vive was alright enough to locate my keyboard in the dark and use desktop view for typing (thank you Chroma RGB, you are my greatest ally), but Index's cameras are fucking shit even compared to that, no idea how they managed to make it worse with two cameras, it looks like they only added them for aesthetics. The only saving grace Index has in camera passthrough is that you don't really need it because its much easier to put the headset on and off.

I have recently purchased a G-Sync 144Hz 31" monitor and VR still has ways to go to feel this crisp and smooth.

I really like the colors on the OLED Vive, but turning still seems like a blurry mess. Should I disable motion smoothing, or just save for an index?

There's hardly any reason to stick to Vive over Index. Keep the base stations and controllers, maybe keep the headset for back-up (somehow I expect it to last longer than Index).
Index has its own issues, but it's still much better than Vive.
Wireless is a bit of a gamechanger, so until Index gets wireless support, there's also that.

I ended up doing a lot of research and picked up a T16000M and TWCS. Its true the ambidextrous design makes it lack buttons, but youve got more than enough on TWCS and the joystick for E:D, in my opinion. X50 series are looking great but I heard their quality and durability is lacking. Warthogs seem to have an Index Controller thing going for them where the premium price dont always mean premium quality, and then theres only Virpil.
I imagine someone playing DCS might not find enough buttons on T16000M, but its a hardcore sim, where E:D is kind of arcade all things considered.

Actually I think it's more about showing less in my regard. I'll be more immersed in night ops in Onward, and I know I'd enjoy greatly those Boneworks bits where you carry a flashlight and a handgun in a dark corridor. On Vive, if the whole scene was black, it was easy to completely ignore SDE and I almost sensed cold and space around me, bigger than my room.
With Index, despite visual clarity, there's too many dealbreakers for true immersion. Black levels are shot, contrast is weird, I feel like there's a blue tint all the time, glare is about as immersive as getting a real kick in the nuts. Audio is better, but it doesn't cancel noise, I can hear my PC, hear my controllers squeaking, it's like I always have a chaperone on I can 'hear'.
Alcohol doesn't help if my eyes are tricking me - and VRChat for example very rarely passes the test due to jankiness, models spazzing out, people with FBT hovering in mid-air. However FBT dancing with a anime chick towering above me when most of my vision was her navel, I was often immersed enough to feel "warmth" on my cheeks.
When I think about truly immersive experiences I think I need a Sensory Deprivation Tank with a wireless VR headset with IPS panels that doesn't exist yet inside.

As an example, I myself find immersion to come so easily and naturally that it is just normal. Ok but whats better practice, transform/rotate the shit out of the shoes to best fit the model feet or stay straight do less x/y/z resizing and cut the parts of the feet sticking through?

I'm sure the finished avatar will end up with a load of problems anway but no harm in trying to do it properly.
