Flares are important if you're doing combat at night. You can launch one above your enemies and turn off your torches to remain incognito while you pick them off with a silenced weapon. Found a cool revolver on Booth, so now I'm thinking about how to animate it to make it shoot 6 times before it requires you to play an "reload" animation to be able to fire again.
Each shot is it's own state, with pause state in between, all controller by the RightTriggerWeight parameter, so it fires on 80 or 90% trigger pull, and you have to release the trigger to 5-20% to fire again.

Not super hard to do, but a fun little project.

Capsense stuff does basic finger tracking, although in the case of the Oculus Touch controllers, it's just a simple off/on to determine which fingers are on the controller.
G2 contollers only have an analog stick and a couple of buttons, so it's going to be harder to trigger gestures with your hands and by extension gesture overrides for facial expressions.

i find the other two overlays to take up equally too much resources, chop frames, and be awkward to set up. the wmr overlay is literally one button and you have a desktop anywhere.

You can always buy the normal WMR controllers if you want touchpads. The headset has 33% more pixels per eye than the quest, better lenses, wider FOV, better blacks,and doesn't compress anything. the only problem i see with going controllerless is that some interaction with the system requires a controller.

Got my Quest 2 today (new cable yesterday, plastic headband also today); took a little while to get it all setup after uninstalling the Oculus app to get the new version that has Quest 2 as a pairing option. I discovered that Virtual Desktop using a cable was displaying a black screen on the in-headset monitor version of my screen - after messing with settings it turns out that Avast Shields (not sure which one(s) yet) caused the whole issue and it now runs nicely.

Aside from that it's very good for first impressions, the screen door is almost completely gone compared to my Quest 1 and even when I first saw the Quest 2 loading screen I didn't realise there was a screen door at all. Swapped out the band for the solid version + glasses spacer immediately and it's comfy even laying down (didn't expect that for hard plastic).
I didn't like VDesktop with the first Quest because of that super obvious door effect - bought the Quest 2 to also use with my computer and it's clear enough now!

It's a lot more clustered now but if you're sprinting around constantly and not being careful where you step or even opening your eyes to look for the shimmer those anomalies give off then this isn't the game for you. You are supposed to be patient and careful. There are random anomalies around that are pretty easy to see but only in select areas are there really dense patches. More dense means there's probably an artifact around, less dense usually means enemies. Basically everything has changed since alpha: map, visuals, sounds, selection of guns, story, they've even added climbing so it's worth taking a look even if the alpha put you off.

ffmpeg-python is great, it's a million times better than squinting at the -filter_complex language and escaping filenames to get the subtitles burned in. The screens are split with this uv offset shader https://pastebin.com/ewdX9wCJ , then you just wire in all the audio sources to the unity video player component. Unfortunately, the new udon video player doesn't properly assign separate audiosources, so I fell back to sdk2.

For streams, the same trick should work in the stream player or the AVPro udon player, but you'd be limited to only two separate audio tracks (left and right channels) unfortunately. And you'd have to mux together the video streams as well. Combined with the 10 to 30-sec delay on HLS-based streams, it's not going to be a great experience.

The new vrchat update ostensibly supported RTSP streams (1 sec delay), but it's broken right now for dumb reasons. I'm waiting for another update to test the feasibility of low-latency streams, which will make things like jackbox games a lot more feasible.

1070 is definitely good enough for Index. That's what I had when I got Index over a year ago. Maybe you don't run 144hz everywhere but it's a more than decent experience. I ended up upgrading to 1080Ti since I got a really good deal on one. You're good starting with a 1070 and then upgrading when it feels limiting and 3070 and amd's new offerings are out.

You have to keep in mind that vast majority of VR games are optimized towards Quest/Rift S quality or even Vive as baseline so small text is basically a special case for simulator games. G2 is probably not worth it unless you're into flight sims.

There's nothing wrong with starting off with an Index, it's what a lot of people now want to upgrade to.

You could get Quest 2 right now though and either use Link mode for wired or Virtual Desktop/ALVR for wireless PCVR.

If you then want to sidegrade to Index the Quest 2 is going to sell for almost full price, or even more if there's supply issues.

What about for sim racing? I still can't decide if I need a G2 or an Index. If I get an index I'll get only one beacon and no controllers, and the shipping should be more reliable, and it's supposed to be more user friendly. The G2 will come with controllers though. The index controllers are 300 bucks though. Maybe when I get a 3080 eventually I can benefit from the higher frequency on the Index too.

It's such a hard decision.

Scoring 120fps in a VR sim racer might be quite difficult I think.
But you're getting an Index without controllers? That's missing out on the biggest appeals for VR. I would go for the G2 in that case.
