Honestly the Oculus Mirror window is pretty great. It gives you horizon stabilization somehow so no more shakiness from head tracking, and it seemingly is performance cost free. It gives you the ability to render higher FOV so no black bars, no shitty zoomed in view.

Taking my own experiences in hand, if I had to go below 1k I'd choose a gently used Vive. Leaves the door open for pucks and if you get those you can carry them to your inevitable Index upgrade.

Prices for everything are fucked at the moment but you can't go wrong with a vive or WMR. Vive gets you into the steamvr ecosystem for 'cheap', with the option to upgrade to cuckpucks if you ever have 300 dollars you want to burn. The HP headsets get you great clarity and resolution with tolerable tracking, but if you ever want fullbody tracking you'll have to spend an extra like 600 dollars.
