What we mostly need is a combination of everything we already have but split across different headsets, which are: choice between inside out and outside in tracking, good fov + resolution + panel (fuck lcd panels), good comfort, good audio + mic, possibility to fbt easily, wireless compatibility, eye tracking (both for interactions but also foveal rendering), ...

Technically there are headsets that have some of those features, but none has all.

Pimax 12K might be that but I would hardly believe them considering their previous products.

Steam deckard from what we know might also be a good next gen headset on paper.

However, even if better things might be released later, laying the waiting game won't benefit you if you do want to get into vr. Some of the extra hardware you can get today for vr (base stations, trackers, things to make your installation more comfortable, ...) will still be useful for years, it's the headset itself that is likely to need an upgrade.

a shader is pretty important, if you look like UTS and have those nasty aliased outlines on your hair or you look completely discolored/too bright/too dark you'll get an eyeroll from me.
UTS users are filtered hard by the de_lostcoast map because they literally just look like total and utter shit in that map, even though the map's behavior is technically completely correct. if you look good there, look good in vrc home and look good in the pug, you're probably good.
