It's annoying because Zuck almost gets it , VR would ideally be a streamlined experience where you get to use your avatars/assets/etc and move seamlessly from one experience to another. For example, being able to go straight from a vrchat style chat lobby into a more pavlov-esque shooting experience.

I had a look at the code just now, never heard of this program. It adds a decode step to the vertex shader that looks like it uses pretty simple operations, just quite a lot of them. So this means that every single frame your character is rendered, every single vertex on your entire avatar has to be decoded as long as you are viewed within bounds (regardless of distance to other players), so that's definitely an extra hit that isn't insignificant.

Quick napkin maths for a 70k poly avatar. I see two decode steps, the first has something like 4 adds and 3 muls for every of the 32 bits of encryption. 224 operations. The second step has 2 x 16 muls and 8 subtractions. All of this for each vertex.

That's like 18.5 million extra math operations, per frame? This kinda sucks.

I feel like VR would be further along than it is now if instead of going all in on the Quest headsets and buying up and funding Quest game developers to pump out cheap experiences for the Quest.
Facebook instead made a high quality PC headset and also focused on making their own full body tracking solution that is as good as light house tracking and then made that Headset/FBT combo as cheap as possible.
Then funded high quality PC VR game development.
Less people would have VR but all those people who do have it would be addicted to it and it would be their main source of gaming entertainment.
It would be an aspirational form of entertainment that everyone wish they had.
We could have that now instead we will reach that in a few years from now.

I think you look at this too much through the lens of what NFTs have traditionally been marketed for. Practically speaking what we want is proof of creation for assets you use in VR. So if you make an asset and people steal/rip it, they can't claim the original was by them. They can modify it and claim ownership over that, but there will be the originals, and the chinky fakes, just like with real products. People can still remix things, but provide proper credit.

Whether blockchain can provide this in a user friendly way remains to be seen, which seems to be true. Communism didn't work and it backfired. Facebook probably knows the risks too with blockchain, but they can still research it, and then pull it back at the last second if they do see it as impossible to do right.

The problem is that unlike with money, we can't prove that the assets in our account are original or genuine. That's good enough if the only thing we want is interoperability, but we want both interoperability and proof of ownership, even if it's just "owning a copy or license". It may be possible for organizations (like banks) to all agree upon verified transactions of digital assets, but it'll be tough to insert those assets in the first place to have them verified.

The effects on creativity are a concern and I can see where that argument comes from. I think it's a trade-off. This ability to have ownership and credit will attract more creators, while there will be a decrease in the openness and spread of ideas. It's unfortunate but the situation isn't entirely negative. Kind of like with the modding situation. Huge modding projects have died in favor of just making their own games, but those games can also be pretty good in their own right.

I installed vrchat thinking it was going to be no different from MMOs where males play cute female characters.
At first it was shocking that lewd stuff were happening between males, but I quickly accepted it as it is no surprise when you put horny young males in cute anime appearances.
Things started feeling awkward when I noticed that the major topic of a massive vrchat community was people talking about boyfriends and them throwing emotional fit about their relationships with them.
As I have experienced something similar but to a lesser degree in MMOs in past, I embraced it due to human nature to be social or herd mentality.
Over time, I've finally realized that vrchat communities are in fact LGBT at core due to all the obvious in your face hints and started feeling alienated.

Cant say for sure, they were a friends they used for a long time. He said he used them plugged in to batteries all of the time which i think lead to them dying sooner. I'd guess way more than a 1000 hours on them. From my experience of one tracker that I had for my hip, I have two years on it now, and its only now starting to show its age, but I've been charging it conservatively. Even so I still get 4 hours on it. The new batteries should get around 4.5h.
