I am a tech dad, and let my 7 year old daughter play quest2 (I have multiple headsets). However, she is restricted to a short duration of time and only certain games (moss, down the rabbit hole, elixir, and rec room). If she feels any discomfort then it's an immediate stop.

Any game which she plays, I play first. Every time she plays, I am around and casting to my phone; where I pay 100% attention.

I'm going to go ahead and post this cringe, but I figured there be a place on 4chan to post it. I've got very little experience with VR. About 7 years ago a coworker had his phone in a cardboard thing and showed me like this star wars experience (idk what to call it, it wasn't a game and it wasn't a movie, it was like a place) and it was really impressive, but there wasn't any real application for it at the time and definitely seemed limited by the hardware so I mostly forgot about it.

I was watching Matt Walsh the other day and he was ragging on this documentary about VR and I was interested so I ended up watching it. It's on HBO "we met in VR" or something and it had this profound effect on me. I was amazed at what you could do there and the stories were just heartwarming. It reminded me of the mid 2000s internet, where everything was about creativity and community instead of the dry corporate ad hellscape that is the internet today. I'm mentally fixated on this Ready Player One tier fantasy.

My question for you guys is, is it really that amazing? Both the community and the capabilities of the system? My wife has been sick for several years and I don't have much in the way of friends and it looks like it could be a fun way to meet people. I don't play video games anymore so I'm less interested in that. I'm also a senior software engineer with a creative side and it looks like it could be a fun opportunity to make some really cool things. I've used unity before, is crafting these "places" and "experiences" in VR particularly difficult?

Contrary to its name, I could only get VR to work reliably in jewgle chrome, or microshaft edge. start steamvr, open the link in the browser, click "enter on device", then it should have a button to "enter in vr" at the bottom. You can also join in desktop (or even a phone), which is honestly probably easier than trying to get VR to work.

Once you're in you can drag in images, gifs, webms and move em around in the world.

Nowhere near what vr is actually like. Google cardboard is like playing one of those 360d videos and having your head turn the camera. Actual vr tracks your hands and head in 3d space so you crouch, turn, swing whatever and it just goes. Lots of people spend their first session in vr just looking at their hands and the scenery then feel really weird when they take the headset off.
Making things for vrc is very easy. Barely anyone that does do it has any previous coding experience or experience with unity. If you do get a vr headset make sure you check out the worlds Tree House in the Shade and Organism. They're simple visual worlds that vr amplifies to be something really neat.

Now that the dust has settled, here are the weekend statistics. There was a noticeable decline in population this weekend according to both steamcharts and steamplayercount. As I said yesterday, it's certainly not a dent in VRChat's overall playerbase, but it's by no means a tiny number either.

Last weekend's peak (according to steamcharts):

I don't like math, so I'm not going to run the percentage decreases on what those numbers mean, but I still think that a nearly 6,000 player loss during peak hours is a noticeable chunk of people. Perhaps it's simply a "drop in the bucket" as some posters here have come to say, but I still think that number is kind of unexpectedly high.

As someone that has talked to a lot of people this weekend in /vrg/ meetups about the EAC issues and CVR (because of course that topic is obviously going to come up), I didn't meet a single person that was adamantly against CVR because of stupid personal reasons or angry at anyone switching. 90% of people were willing to try it out, but they think it's too early right now especially with server issues, they're looking for it to be stable first. The other 10% that refuses to even check it out were because they spent gazillions of hours on their avatars with 3.0 and physbone and avatar dynamics and etc. complicated stuff that they wouldn't have in CVR, so they don't want to do anything until CVR has an equivalent of their avatar features.

I bought Virtual Desktop using $20 of Quest 2 referral link credit that I got for my headset yesterday. Using Virtual Desktop to play a SteamVR game HAS to use less battery and resources than playing it natively right, considering I don't have a poorfag rig (3080/3700x). The headset still has to handle the display and motion tracking as well as the data communication over 5Ghz WiFi, but not having to deal with the additional rendering workload has to save a somewhat noticeable amount of battery life right.

Also, is there any app on the Quest store (that's not a game, since I can just get it for cheaper/free elsewhere) that's worth it enough to spend my remaining $10 on?

Far less than VR Chat at the moment, after the surge they've restored the ability to upload avatars and it looks like it's pretty simple to convert VRC-ready avatars to CVR, so people have been porting stuff over.

Porting VRC avatars to CVR was pretty easy. They use the same Unity version and there are automated conversion tools. But even when doing it manually, it's literally the same as either VRCSDK2 or VRCSDK3 depending on the method you go for.
The only difference is that the toggles menu isn't as good as VRC's, but I found myself needing my toggles a lot less now that props separate from the avatar are a thing.

ChilloutVR is where the big boys play.

536 is a very good number, though. I've played on private servers or versions of games that barely reached 200 concurrent players in the past, and they were still very much playable. TF2C immediately comes to mind; you don't need 30k players (15k of whom are ESL) for you to enjoy it. You just need interesting people.
