so i was considering quest pro for the eye and face tracking for vrchat, but i dunno.. seems kinda pointless.
avatars already have animated eyes which don't really match real eye positions but basically it's close enough since nobody really notices that in vrc.. same with the mouth.. you can already have the mouth animated based on the analysis of the sound when you talk, so having mounth track would be useful for the rare occasion if you want to open your mouth while quite or some shit
so it doesn't really seem worth the money to only have this small improvement in facial animations, definitely not like fbt which is a huge easily visible difference

Already own them. They’re really nice. They make fbt work way better. Skip the pro though unless you got crazy amounts of cash. Q2 and pro controllers wireless with fb is a great combo. You can resell q2 controllers on eBay for about 100$ each too so not an expensive upgrade.

I want to try out sleeping in VR and generally lying in my bed and engaging in escapist media for many hours at a time with some video games, porn, vrchat etc. So comfort is important. Seems like there's three popular options on the market currently with inside out tracking, the HP Reverb G2, Quest 2, and Pico 4
Which one of these would be the best for my use case? I also have a PC with a 5700XT graphics card and plan on using that instead of the hardware inside the headsets. Thanks

I'd say Quest. It is least comfortable out of the box, but it's easiest to mod because there's so much aftermarket for alternative straps and accessories and you can probably fine one that suits you. Quest 2 also has the best inside out tracking by far. Your video card might not be able to keep up with the higher specs of the G2. I don't know anyone with a Pico.

If it's not serious, why in particular do you want to spend most of your VR time in bed? it's not the best place for VR because of the common motion controls that want a full range of movement. Sleeping in VR is nice because it's like falling asleep in a call with someone but more intimate. It's never comfortable and there's no much point if you don't have someone to do it with.

BARE minimum? A GTX 970 as a GPU is just enough right now. You will suffer and struggle and lag, and it may become not enough in about 1 years' time. Get a 1080 or better. The RTX 4060 12GB is a decent budget option for VRC.
CPU minimum is probably something like an i7 7700k.

DO NOT buy AMD cards, no matter what you do. Their drivers are shit and you will endlessly cope and seethe with every single new game you try to play. It also does not play nicely with VRChat. Expect nonstop minor issues and possibly even crashes.

It still sucks. I know a few people with AMD's. They are constantly juggling driver versions for various reasons, one of them can't even play certain games anymore because older drivers crash and newer drivers aren't recognized by certain games.
If you are okay with uninstalling and reinstalling a different driver version every time you want to boot up certain games (and then reinstall again when you play VRC), AMD is a decent choice. Just don't ask me why my avatar's hair looks blocky and pixelated or why that tank camera is upside-down.

About 4 years ago, the AMD driver situation was so bad in VRC that about 80% of anime models were invisible for users with certain high-end AMD cards. These shader issues are still a thing today, just not quite as prominent. Shader authors mention that supporting AMD is a constant uphill battle once you get deeper into shaders. Things work differently, or don't work at all, or crash AMD users.
Also you will have a harder time doing anything with AI, you will have a harder time recording or streaming video, and by extension you will have a harder time if you decide to buy a Quest 2.
AMD makes good cards at affordable prices, but their drivers are fucking abysmal.

Need a bit of advice and/or input, I'm going into VR and buying a headset, but am unsure if I need to upgrade my CPU at the same time. The rest of my parts are overkill as they are, and I figure it couldn't hurt, but don't know how specced out I should be to enjoy VR to the fullest extent.
Currently, I have an i5 9600KF which is what I'm considering upgrading, and I'm thinking of getting the Index as per the rentry guide. Any opinions?

The two largest bottlenecks are usually vram and cpu in my experience and if you've got anything newer than a mid to high end 2000 series nvidia card with at least 8gb of vram then cpu will probably be your limiting factor. That said if you just turn the number of avatars rendering down you can run an index and vrc on a 1080 and an old several gen old i7 comfortably. On the opposite spectrum if you load into a shit optimized world with 50 booths you'll make a brand new i9 and a 4090 eat shit and die.

They were both better after the upgrade, actually made a bigger difference in VRC than in racing sims, but it's not like I couldn't run VR games before I upgraded. VRChat doesn't run well in large instances anyways, you'll be stuck using avatar hider no matter what.

10 hours for the basics of blender and unity to make a change to an existing avatar and successful upload. Most of that time will be getting familiar with the software itself, both blender and unity are extremely complicated and intimidating programs. They were very difficult when I started: I would often break something, not know what I did and lack the vocabulary to even describe the problem I wanted help with. There's probably some "introduction to blender" book or tutorial that could have helped me a lot. Maybe start there.

Expect 300+ hours to go from no experience to making a serious full-featured avatar from scratch. Less if you want to make a meme avatar like a floating tv or something.

If that's your ultimate goal don't be discouraged. Most people here don't make a from-scratch avatar, they buy an existing avatar base and learn the minimum whenever they want to add to it. If you just follow their example and try to do something new each time you'll slowly learn all the areas you need to know to make something completely original. Baby steps like >>410303359 says.
