Final results for last week's Dirt Rally 2.0 event in Sweden. Was pretty tricky, but RWD snow driving is fun. Better luck next time to those that got DQed.
This week, we'll be running Group A in Scotland. You have until the usual time next Monday to get your runs done, club link is in the OP if you need it.

First time driving on ice and with the historic RWD, it was really tough. Hard to break the habit of using the throttle to straighten up in the corners and even on straights there was such a fine line between going fast and starting to spin.

Congratulations on your new Pico 4 VR headset! As a beginner to VR, there are many exciting games and experiences that you can try. Here are a few recommendations to get you started:

Beat Saber - This rhythm game has you slicing and dodging blocks to the beat of catchy music. It's a great way to get moving and test out the Pico 4's tracking capabilities.

Superhot VR - In this game, time only moves when you do. Dodge bullets and take out enemies in slow motion, feeling like you're in your own action movie.

The Lab - This is a collection of mini-games and experiences created by Valve, the makers of the SteamVR platform. It's a great introduction to VR and will help you get used to the Pico 4's controllers.

Job Simulator - This humorous game puts you in a world where robots have taken over all jobs, so you get to simulate what it was like to be a human worker. It's a fun way to experiment with VR interactions and try out different jobs.

Moss - In this charming adventure game, you play as a small mouse exploring a magical world. It's a great showcase of the Pico 4's immersive visuals and 3D audio.

Remember to take breaks and adjust the settings to your comfort level. Have fun exploring your new VR headset!

I've had mine for 10 days now and it's also my first VR experience. I tried pistol whip native and I felt somewhat fine, little bit dizzy but nothing bad. Then contractors and moving your character around for the first 30 minutes is extremely nauseous, however if you stick to it and keep on trying it'll be manageable. A week later and I'm done with all the hl2 games in VR and those are pretty fast paced in term of movement but I've got no more vr sickness anymore. So yeah, I think you should take break when it becomes unbearable but then you should also get back into it asap so you can build your tolerance in one go.

How do I know which resolution gets passed to the game?
I'm playing Lone Echo 2 with revive and virtual desktop on my headset.
Does the steamvr resolution applies through revive? In Lone Echo 1 I could boot the game directly via VD and it was the occulus API and I could run that game easily at 1.5x res in the settings but LE2 chugs on high settings at 1.0x on my 4080

Fall 2021. I immediately had to RMA the antenna and PCIe card and potentially got fairly new hardware.
My first unit would only work when connected directly to the PCIe card without the cable, and I used it that way for a couple of weeks.
The antenna sitting near the floor at the back of my computer is clearly a terrible configuration, and it's the only time I experienced the resolution dropping.
Picture related.

As a G2 owner I'd say go pico 4 or Q2. For vrchat It rly sucks not having sensory trackers on your hands you basically can only make handgestures. For beat saber the tracking is ok but not the best. The display is very high res so if you have a good PC that's the big plus

The G2 is something I'd recommend when paired with the lighthouse system; when you basically glue a tracker to the headset and use lighthouse controllers it turns into one of the best platforms in VR right now. But expensive. And if you're going expensive you probably want eye tracking or something.

Anonymous No.426414631 Replies: >>426414792 >>426414825

It really depends how much picking up you're doing. For something like HL2 where stuff drops like candy and there's always pickups I just wanna run over it. If it's like you pick up a couple things every hour then I would prefer to pick them up manually; usually off a desk or something rather than the floor though.
Anonymous No.426414792
>>426414631
I'd also compare and contrast what the item is as well; wrist or backpack storage should be a staple of VR: just copy what works well. Although I like chest and hip storage too, but it's hard to get the body always aligned with the head, an when you bend down it becomes all fucky.
Anonymous No.426414825
>>426414631
Talking about HL2 I think it was well down. You have a long grab range so you can pick stuff up without crouching and if you wish you can swap to the gravity gun and then using your other hand to grab the thing.
On the otherspectrum there's contractors where the grab hitbox of things hitting the ground is super small and it's waste of time to crouch and try to grab things, and then there's other games where you point your finger at something far away and it instantly pops into your hand which I don't like at all.

VRchat player types
From my observation we have these types of people:
1) Chatters (self-explanatory, is in it for the social element)
2) Particlefags (chuunis that really like the sense of power of COOL they can create in the game)
3) Alcoholics (Like chatters but enjoy it while drunk)
4) Explorers (Exploration of new visual worlds and new game worlds a like. Completion and discovery of new things. Hundreds of new worlds per week. Finding hidden gems)
5) Avatar Creators
5.1) Clothing and base model cuteness min maxers (Artist fashion designers)
5.2) Tricks and useability functions (programmers and prefab makers)
5.3) Cosplayer
6) Map Creators
6.1) Map Visual (Artist landscapers and chill and comfy world creators)
6.2) Game design (These are the gamedevs that delve in the programming and prefab part of map making)
7) Killers, Crashers and Hackers (Revels in finding ways of breaking the game for themselves and others)
8) Photographers (Likes taking photos of interesting things both for Avatars and Maps)
9) Lewders (I'm cooooming. People who like the next step of virtual Erotic Role Play. The added sense of presence really make it an amazing virtual degeneracy)
10) Eventfags (People that are part "chatter" but also part "creator". They enjoy hosting and making events that other people would partake in. Seeing others have fun on the event they have meticulously crafted is the reward that they seek.)
11) Streamers ($$$)
12) Loners (Likes to be alone but plays an MMO)
13) E-girls (sub-group of chatters but goes in for attention and orbiters)
14) Furries (Chatters but they like being animals)
15) Dancers (Likes to move it in FBT)
16) Musically inclined (Tries to simulate and sync music through the 800 ping of VRchat)
17) Boardgame autists (Mahjong, chess, checkers etc)
18) Watcher (Anime, movie, tv watcher using VRchat video player with other people)
19) Drug users (tinctures and pretty colors)
Extra
sleepers, desktoppers, quest kids, commun leader, ASL etc.

One of my Vive Tracker 2.0's doesn't seem to charge any more - if I plug it in, the light comes on and I can turn it on, but it appears to have no battery. If I unplug it, it immediately turns off and wont respond if I press the power button. Is there any way to recover it?

If not, is the Vive Tracker 3.0 the way to go for a replacement?
Anonymous No.426422008
>>426421839
It's probably fucked. You can try replacing the firmware by plugging it into your PC but if that doesn't work you are out of luck. Since it's a 2.0 you are probably well past an RMA. Get a 3.0 tracker instead.
Beware, buying a 3.0 is quite likely to make you want to replace your other 2.0's too. The battery lasts like twice as long (almost exactly as long as the index controllers) which is nice if you don't have battery bank straps.
Anonymous No.426422072
>>426421839
You could try replacing the battery: the battery model is the B2PYV100 and there's decent availability on aliexpress and maybe ebay. Results may vary per battery: I ordered 3 from 3 different places: 1 arrived just fine and works fine, 1 arrived just fine but the battery was worse than the original, and 1 hasn't arrived (yet?).
Replacing them isn't too hard: just keep in mind there's 3 screws in the base, and you can unscrew the boards rather than unplug the ribbon cables.

I'd try this if it works while plugged in.

>Future proofing
It doesn't work.
You are not going to futureproof yourself with b650 board.
Next gen of gpu is pcie5.
And ada is especially bad gen to future proof on.
Blackwell is expected to be a massively new arch and nvidia needs to build good public opinion again, just like after Turing, so prices should be pretty good.
The only good features from Ada are raytracing ones, which are of limited use.

Buy what you absolutely need right now and save the money, then buy new things later.
You are going to drop frames in VRchat regardless.

Use an int parameter and switch between 3 or more states depending on how many outfits you have. Each animation should turn on the outfit you want and turn off the others. It's not much different from having a single outfit toggle.
Though if you have that many outfits you're pushing it a little and should consider putting them on separate avatars instead. It's a good way to get hidden based on egregious VRAM usage or a lot of materials/meshes.

i would hide people using a filesize and vram threshold combo if I could but vrchat's dev team is clueless and did not add that option, instead thinking that 110mb is acceptable as (((medium)))
75mb as (((good))) is fucking stupid as well and 40mb on (((excellent))) is still a joke

They're a bit generous on vram, but even so, you'd have to have about 40 people within your avatar-hiding distance to take up enough vram to have a decent performance impact no? I wish they'd add a perf rank for filesize though, that would be nice. 10mb or less for good, 25 for medium, 35 for poor, 50 for very poor, or something.

My medium avatar with 4 outfits doesn't take anywhere near that much vram

there's not a whole lot of space left for OS, steamvr, vrchat itself and the world if you're sitting in that full instance, and that's assuming EVERYONE is at or below that "good" threshold
if you're hitting your disk to swap out vram from active memory, you're having a bad time

You're right, it's a bit high. But most of the time you're not in a 80 person instance. Pull that down to 60 people and it's good. Your standards are simply too high; 80 person has lots of reasons it's poorly performing; Animation controller layers being the BIIIG one. My GPU is not strained in those big instances, it's always my CPU.
But it's not that bad. When you actually analyze people's VRAM usage (and I did), 20% of the avatars take up 60% of the VRAM. Or something I should actually run the numbers.

its a correlation thing, not moving goalposts
you're doing SOMETHING to use more vram that someone using much less vram won't be doing
I can't believe I have to spell this out but:
>110 MB VRAM allowed
>8 skinned meshes
>16 meshes
>16 material slots
>16 dynamic bone components
>32 dynamic bone transforms
>dynamic bone colliders/collision check counts at all
>16 physbone components
>128 physbone transforms
>16 physbone colliders
>256 physbone collision check count
>24 avatar dynamic contacts
>16 animators
>8 particle systems
>particles at all
>8 physics colliders
>8 phsics rigidbodies
>8 audio sources
start multiplying this all by 40, 60, 80 for the typical pcvr rig

So you're saying that someone who uses a lot of vram is likely to be nearly maxing out the constraints of medium? I think that's very rare and unlikely, but it's a good point that if someone really pushed the limits like that then it would be a lot worse performance than just the average medium. VRAM usage is actually very easy to use a lot of, even if you do not have a high value in the other categories. It only takes a few very large textures to start getting way up there. That doesn't mean it's fine to have huge vram usage but I do think it means you are wrong about it indicating a high usage in other categories. My medium avatar is only medium in vram and meshes

How much vram do you think "material" takes. Material is a shader program. It doesn't take shit compared to everything else.
It's just mesh+textures.
In a perfect world you would only need one drawcall per material, because you don't need to change the pipeline, dunno how it's implemented in vrchat though.
Pipeline change is "expensive" computationally, but doesn't take a lot of vram.

I remember when it was atlassing everything to 1 texture on every model that was the most important, then it became drawcalls, then it became particles (remember the soft particle ban they did?) then it was IK, then it was this and that and blahblahblah now the newest target is VRAM and constraints and animators and it turns out all that other earlier stuff wasn't actually *as* important as they thought it was so now this is the new bad boogeyman.

it's already animation layers. There's no new boogeyman each year, it's an additional boogeyman. All these things factor together. And in fairness, a lot of this are issues with Unity itself(aside from VRAM) and weren't even discovered as flaws in the engine until VRC came along as Unity's first real stress test.
Vram was always an issue and isn't something inherent to vrc or the engine, but people were less likely in the past to have vram monsters than they are now.

Of all the things to refuse to optimize, VRAM is literally the easiest thing. You only need unity to do it in 99% of cases. Just load up the textures, set off of normal quality to high quality so you lose the ugly compression that made you think you needed your 4k textures on anime girls. Then just bump your texture res down until you see detrimental results to quality. For a little more optimization, use normal quality or even low quality on things like masks, but that's splitting hairs. I did this to get an avatar that was at 500 mb of vram usage at stock import settings down to 30. It's really just that easy

vram helps but the main threshold is being below 16gb if you hang out in 80 person instances since that's an easy scenario where texture memory will get swapped into disk as you look around and cause a shitstorm
the easiest way to improve vrchat overall is to get an x3d (3d v-cache) ryzen cpu like the 5800x3d, 7800x3d, or 7950x3d (and lock vrchat to one ccd if chosen)
the game loves having cache; you can hit similar numbers on a silly 13900k system with 8000MHz ram but even that will be unstable unless you're lucky with your hardware

I thought compression didn't matter for vram since it's uncompressed when it is loaded to the vram? But anyway, Most anime models suffer from an obvious loss of quality just going down to 2k from 4k, because all the important parts of the UV tend to all be atlased in with everything else. Having a few big textures is fine, but you will start to see larger vram sizes. If you have a modern gpu and you use the distance hiding it's literally not an issue if you are medium or below

Crunch compression doesn't matter for vram, and is actually detrimental to frame times(note, hitching when you load avatars using it). The quality settings changes the format of the texture, and the format unity uses for normal compresses it to have the blocky look that normalfags think is just the texture being low res(thus needlessly bumping the res higher and higher).
Almost all of my avatars use 1k and the occasional 2k texture with no noticeable quality drop, not even on seams. People with quality issues from atlasing are either not adding a good enough margin or are using cat's awful auto atlasser

If you start making custom atlases for all your anime models, you lose compatibility with different versions and texture edits and other things because now you have a different UV. Anon, I sincerely hope you aren't playing dumb. Just because an image is set to a higher res doesn't mean it needs to be that resolution. Anime textures in particular are very low on detail, meaning they scale down extremely well without visible loss.

We are talking about compression here, you absolute retard.
BC7 (high quality in mongoloid speak) is virtually indistinguishable from raw RGBA.
One 4k texture in bc7 takes just 16MB of VRAM.
Even if you are an absolute troglodyte and just NEED your three 4k textures, it still would be less than 50MB.

That's not correct, well depends on the content, but for tightly packed atlases it would be noticeble.

Meh, can't confirm this in any way. Mine are now seven years old (25th of April 2016) and still running strong without any problem whatsoever, after slamming them into walls, furniture and stone windowsills (and, most of all of course, into the floor and the Vive (later Vive Pro) on my face). These things are tanks.

However, I would prefer finger tracking, so generally, I'm interested in these etee controllers, but ONLY a trackpad and finger controlling...? At least the wands have a physical trigger, two buttons and the grip buttons in addition to the trackpad.
I might get them anyway if reviews are good, depending on the price over here. Since the Index controllers have been permanently sold out in my region since like forever and are only available at horrible reseller prices, they might even come cheaper.

Let me know if there's anything else you want to run, but try to stick to stuff that we know works online and get any requests in tonight.
Shouldn't need any mods for now since all of the content is official, but I'll link the Mega if something changes. Server is up in case you need to test anything.

I have some from their kickstarter 3 years ago. They are pretty mediocre. weighs about the same as the knuckles, not as comfortable because of the tiny weird finger strap. The finger tracking is better than the index, but not perfect, and since all the virtual button gestures depend on it, it works quite badly in practice. On the bright side the little steamvr tracker dongles work perfectly on their own, if you need weird shaped steamvr trackers.

Uh, if anybody wants to buy them from me though, reply to this post.

I'm on an Index and while some testing showed that tapping the gesture toggle wouldn't lock my hand if it wasn't performing a gesture, if I toggled it off while forming a gesture, that hand would get locked even if the other hand which wasn't gesturing would. The shortened movies are pretty good in what they cut down and what they add.

The one thing that I remember being blatantly superior is the scene in the second one where Kittan tries to take on an alien with a shotgun in the show.

You will never be a real putter. You have no shot, you have no angle, you have no approach. You are a vr gamer twisted by unlocked clubs and lost balls into a crude mockery of golfing perfection.

All the “birdies” you get are two-faced and half-hearted. Behind your back people mock you. Your fellow putters are amused and bewildered of you, your “friends” laugh at your ghoulish over par scores behind closed doors.

Holes are utterly repulsed by your shots. Thousands of years of evolution have allowed golfers to put balls in holes with incredible efficiency. Even your shots that get near the hole look uncanny and spiral out. Your putting posture is a dead giveaway. And even if you manage to get a ball near the hole, you will be way over par and bogey the second your rainbow colored meme ball barely slides into the hole.

You will never be below par. You wrench out a fake smile every single morning and tell yourself it’s going to be ok, but deep inside you feel the depression creeping up like a weed, ready to crush you under the unbearable weight.

Eventually it’ll be too much to bear - you’ll open single player, enter practice mode, and choose non-scoring practice holes, and grind holes until you get other than last on the scoreboard. Your putting friends will see your playtime hours, heartbroken but relieved that they no longer have to live with you always taking the most turns. They’ll beat your score even without practice, and every thread reader for the rest of eternity will know how hard you tried just to get under par. You will always be not welcome in hard mode, and all that will remain of your legacy is a scoreboard posted in the thread where you have no crown.

This is your fate. This is what you chose. There is no turning back.

New VR gameplay video just dropped.
https://youtu.be/jm7mnchRw8U
What do you think? It is pretty much the desktop version but with VR controls. I thought about adding some grabbing and throwing controls, but I personally never really cared for it. I have the most ingame VR time in From Other Suns, Subnautica, Skyrim VR and Serious Sam VR.

Get a HP Reverb G2, or bite the bullet and get a Meta account. The Reverb G2 is arguably the better choice because it's also a desktop headset rather than mobile cope, and its price point is on par with the Quest 2.
Better act fast because HP is going to stop making VR headsets.
