Reposting in new thread - I'm losing my mind over this Apple Vision Pro. After all these years of hype and rumour and delays and THIS is what they have to show as their big new device on par in importance with the original iPhone. A glorified Quest 2 with no controllers and no games. I am fucking stunned. I thought at MINIMUM it would be a cool luxury device with some funny quirky features that ultimately aren't particularly useful and not a device for me, but it can't even manage that. They showed NOTHING. What the fuck can this thing do that a Quest 2 can't? You can use it as a display for your Macbook? You can do videocalls where you are represented as a 3d avatar? Like holy shit. Normies aren't going to give a shit because they showed NOTHING cool or innovative or interesting. VR already has a stigma and everyone is familiar with the concept of portable VR, so spending half of your presentation showing someone sitting alone in a room looking at fucking 2d photographs isn't going to get anyone excited or invested in your product.

Have they lost the plot? The presentation before the reveal was also pretty garbage, spending like 5 minutes talking about showing photos when people call you and SCREENSAVERS. The only cool thing they showed at all was when they picked a 'live' photo and instantly turned it into a sticker, which magically removed the background from it.

The fucking headset doesn't even have haptics. Or ANY games that aren't flatgames. The Disney portion was just showing concepts that 'could' be done, like all the same shit we've seen before with second screens and companion apps.

The price was largely irrelevant to my reaction but having the balls to announce it at $3.5k, after showing so little, is crazy. Nothing interesting from a VR perspective, nothing interesting from an AR perspective. Nothing innovative, nothing cool. Nothing. At minimum, show us something cool with hand tracking. ANYTHING

same thing apple always offers, polish. Most likely far better hand tracking than anything around, most likely most natural, fast, and accurate eye tracking for foveated rendering, especially combined with insane resolution display. At least, let's hope so - because if it costs $3500 and feels as much of a jank as any other headset, VR will suffer really bad reputation for a while, big companies pulling out, whatnot.

But that aside!
Ladies(male) and gentlewomen.
We're also back again! Idols, Wishing and Stars? What's missing?
The dancing of course. /ourDJ/ is once again dropping some beats for you to idol step to.
With every rendition, not only does the DJ improve but also the club. I'm very proud of the visuals now.

Once again, there will be a passcode to this club. The passcode this time is 6182
Naturally, you will have to add Spheri to your merry band of friends so u don't get hit.

The theme around this time is the friends we've made along the way, dress in your Yukata,
idol outfit or just the usual dance outfit, we're all uniting together in this month.
I'm not planning on making it a groups+ instance for now, it'll be Friends+ once again.

This'll be happening the upcoming Friday night, 1 AM EST.
(Yes, this is technically Saturday, but it does not collide with the other VRC event that the dog does.)
Hope to see you there anons!
I'll post daily reminders orso as we get closer to the date.

Valve had an aspirational prototype headset where they asked the engineers to come up with the best hardware possible, costs and complexity be damned. It was called Vader and they said if it could even somehow be mass produced, it'd still run up $5K. I think it was the test mule for their HDR and fingertracking stuff.

It's a long game tactic. Setting the Index between $1100 to $1200 shows the cap for most willing to pay for a hobbyist option. In so doing some might be hesitant based on price, but as we've seen with Quest Pro (and it's price drop because of it) any other set that's above $1100 makes people worry question if it's really worth it.

Can already confirm it's way too fucking heavy for the pitiful headstrap, they will release an "improved" headstrap later, they have to because it's so fucking bad.
It's not as heavy as a Quest Pro, but it's much heavier than a Quest 2.
FOV is compromised as fuck.
It's too god damned hot and they're going to fix it with worse performance.

Shame on any reviewer that doesn't mention the weight or the heat.
Though many will never experience the heat because they'll just be playing around with Facetime and the new note-taking bullshit, remarking at the quality of the music videos they watch.

It's so frustrating because all we've ever needed since 2018 was just a few high quality, well-funded AAA games, but instead these Fortune 500 companies drop billions on shit like Facetime or pic related. I cannot comprehend what is going through their heads, it's like there's something about VR development that makes people retarded.

Eye tracking has actual utility, it's facial tracking that's the gimmick for social games.
Eye tracking has net returns on performance because it allows for proper foveated rendering, which definitely matters as we try to get higher and higher resolutions out of headsets.
Gonna be pretty necessary as we approach retina resolution and higher FOVs, the goal being to exceed 12,600x9,600 at a "full" 210x160 FOV.

Things that are nice innovations:

Truly it's everything I ever wanted from the Nreal/Xreal Air, in a $3500 heavyweight with no battery life.
Also, that battery pack is TINY, I don't know the rating but getting "useful" battery life with a larger pack should be doable.
Power draw is a whole hell of a lot more than a Quest 2, easily over 30W, might be over 40W, not like they'll tell us.

All the real reviewers had special facial interfaces made for them ahead of time.
I just got to shove my face into one for a couple of minutes and have nothing to report but heft, sweat, and incredible clarity.
I have had the pleasure of trying a Pimax Crystal, and the Apple headset is considerably better in terms of image quality and clarity, it's the best VR headset I've ever seen as far as display and optics go.
The FOV wasn't impressive but take that with a grain of salt, it might be heaps better with the right facial interface.

Headset is exactly what was expected, an overpriced productivity-oriented headset with fundamental flaws that's totally useless for gaming.
It's heavy as fuck, hot as fuck, and doesn't have enough battery life to watch an average feature film.
The screens are great, optics are great, the rest is meh, and none of it matters for /vrg/ because the one thing it absolutely cannot do is play VR games.
It's an iPad Pro strapped to your face with the TDP cranked up even higher than the overheatomatic Macbook Air so it will never stop thermal throttling.

Decided to give up to temptation and use eyetrack. Surprised how fast it is, if I'll get to improve general accuracy, it might be a viable way to start fiddling with foveated rendering, say in bullshit ass project wingman that runs like trash even on high-end gpus. I even remember using static form of foveated rendering for PW, and it had center position of circle in shader mod config, so if it can be made dynamic, it's more than possible

I'm still a bit scared about IR levels. but hey, if no one reported eye loss yet, it's all good, isn't it

I'm rather egalitarian, so the way I see it, there's a chance furry teenager will nail something just as well as professional boomer dev. But yeah, I'm also rather cautious, so you won't see me using this eyetrack in VRC too much. Will screw around a bit, then drop it, I'm sure not using it for 8h through VRC nights. I did some extremely basic and possibly flawed experimentation, it seems like amount of IR light in headset is as high as sitting outside in shade during sunny day. But, during sunny day your eye pupil is tiny, unlike when you're sitting in a dark room in VR. Been thinking about strobing IR light, hopefully synced with camera if possible, that would minimize overall amount of light ever so slightly - didn't got to do anything in this direction yet though[/spoiler]

Since quest 2 works on android you can easily host an USB server on it using VirtualHere there's an old apk that doesnt require to pay for single device connection.
You also need to give the app permissions to camera using ADB.

Its still quite janky and i need to figure it out so i dont get random disconnects and dont have to restart OSC server several times for it to click.

You wouldn't even need to click. You would just need to think about clicking, good eyetracking can figure out your intention just by looking at your physiological responses.
And while, it's fine for "scrolling iphone/browsing net" type of things, nobody says that you can't use eye-tracking together with traditional controllers, which is what I had in mind in the first place.

DFR isn't as simple as fixed foveated rendering, contrary to what many people think. I've talked with a few devs concerning it. The problem is the dynamic nature and the difficulty for DFR is you need to detect which eye the game is rendering to at render time (very hard), not at submission time (easy). But FFR can do this without any need to distinguish between the eyes due to the static nature.

So just because something supports FFR that doesn't mean it'll automatically work with DFR.

>The problem is the dynamic nature and the difficulty for DFR is you need to detect which eye the game is rendering to at render time (very hard), not at submission time (easy).
The only difference is latency.
Pull the input till the last possible moment, render.
Foveated rendering shouldn't affect the game logic, so you can pull right until the start of GPU frame.
If the eye-tracking API doesn't provide predictions itself, you write your own, wouldn't be very hard, you need to predict around ~15ms total.

You would think it's that easy, but it's apparently not from the multiple people I've talked with, including the guy who's behind the OpenXR toolkit. Guessing which eye is being rendering during rendering is extremely difficult. How easy it's going to be also depends on the exact rendering pipeline for the game, be it something like single or multi-pass, then stereo, sequential, or mixed.

At least if we're talking injection methods, such as like the VRPerfkit does with fixed foveated rendering.

Who the fuck still renders sequentially?
Multiview extensions are how old at this point? 5 years?

Who cares? You would need all pixels ready for present anyway, the max latency is fixed.

Why? Doesn't make sense. Both eyes are being rendered at the same time, multiview is a thing.

https://iliaskapouranis.com/2020/07/13/is-single-pass-stereo-worth-it/

Sequential isn't extremely common but some games are still using it because of things like this.

Perhaps there's a misunderstanding here. It's extremely easy for a developer to implement native support on their own. The problems I'm outlining and what I'm talking about is when you try to force it via external tools which have more limited access and ability to interface with the engine. The GPU has no idea what "eye" is being rendered too, it cannot on its own decide to apply the correct VRS mask because it has no concept of "eyes" without being told by the game. Something, somewhere has to set up that mask BEFORE rendering starts. Only the game knows that information and so if the game isn't properly set up to support it that's why injection methods can sometimes be a headache due to the dynamic nature of DFR without having very deep access to the game's engine and inner workings.

It basically does have an iPhone CPU.
People are saying it's overpowered when it's a down-specced iPad Pro processor with the TDP severely limited.
The constant throttling ensures you cannot actually manage to do anything intensive with it.
The real purpose of the R1 chip is the maintain spatial tracking while the M2 struggles, so you'll never lose the smoothness even while the M2 is getting throttled back by half, barely managing to not catch fire while it chews its way through normal mundane tasks.

That delightful clip they showed of Death Stranding running with PS4 level graphics and struggling to maintain 45FPS? That's with the M2 Max 24 core CPU with 76 GPU cores.
The Vision Pro has 8 CPU cores, and 8 GPU cores, it's the weakest version of the M2, and it still generates way too much heat for this thing.
It's inefficient as fuck, paired with the 2 insanely bright primary displays, plus the additional lenticular front display, jammed into a glass sandwich.
That's why the thing just DRINKS power and even the (~30W) external battery pack can only run it for about 2 hours of web browsing and note taking, less than 1 hour watching a 4K movie.
The peak power draw is easily over 45W, that's a 45W heater attached directly to your face.
The iPad Pro overheats, the MacBook Air overheats, this thing will overheat and thermal throttle endlessly.

Look at the Pico 4 Pro. I don't actually recommend it, I recommend you sit and wait another year, but the Pico 4 Pro would be an upgrade.
Pancake lenses, better IPD adjustment range, better passthrough, slightly higher resolution, 90Hz ONLY no 120Hz, significantly better FOV and FAR superior Binocular Overlap, weighs close to the same as the Quest 2 but also adds Eye and Face tracking.
Technically it's Chinese-market only, but like everything else of course you can just buy one anyway.

Eye and Face! The Pico 4 Pro is probably the "best" all-around and "best value" headset there is currently, but it's Chinese-market and Chinese-quality.
On paper it's a no-brainer, and an incredible value at $600USD, but the reality is you won't find it for MSRP outside of China, support for it is shit, they have the same QC issues as the standard Pico 4 shipping headsets with shit-tier lenses and fucked up screens.
So god damned good "on paper" but in reality its a bit of a shit experience much like the regular Pico 4, a great headset but not great quality or support behind it, and typically over $800USD into your hands outside of China.

Literally nothing.
There's nothing interesting or of note about it aside from the high quality of the displays, as was expected of an Apple product.
It's marketed as a laptop alternative when it's basically a $3500 iPad Pro strapped to your face.

The FOV is worse than a Quest 2, it weighs more than a Samsung Odyssey, there are no controllers and they have no intention of doing controller tracking of any kind, it's incapable of anything that we currently associate with VR aside from watching 360 panoramic video like we all did with our cellphones 8 years ago, it runs too hot, it has no battery life, and any damage to the front glass will completely disable it.

There's not much for a PC headset. The only new decent option is bigscreen but that doesn't even have a wireless option and you need base stations + index controllers so it'd cost like $1500 USD. Also, you need an iPhone to scan your face so they can make a custom face gasket. You can wait for the Quest 3 and I'm sure it'll be the best wireless headset because of the new chip, and software will probably be hella polished by then.

Their focus is on their biggest product, TikTok, these Pico headsets are just a faff for them, they aren't worth trying to push into the US while they're fighting to keep their most profitable product in the most profitable market.

Why are you iffy on it but have the Pico 4 in mind when you can't even buy controller replacements for the Pico 4 and the support is worse than Index, so you're likely to have a shit experience with RMA? The Q3 will have a next gen chip which will very likely benefit PCVR because of better encoding options and possibly better wifi capabilities.

Unless you count local movement prediction as a core pillar of netcode then probably around 2013~
Ever models you see on the map is virtually images of your ping - 1 tick, spread patterns are server side to fuck up with cheaters. Backward reconciliation on shots, first to hit is prio with damage so you never get instanced of two guys killing each others in a firefight. It even occludes players through the maps as well to fuck up with ESP if your POV is not meant to see them.
Might suck if you get 70+ ms to the server with jitters and packet loss but for most of western europe it's an amazing experience I think.
Anonymous No.432730869
>>432730118
>spread patterns are server side
That change was long after the skins update, not 2013.
>first to hit is prio with damage so you never get instanced of two guys killing each others in a firefight.
That's because all the guns are hitscan. Most vr shooters actually simulate bullet travel.
>Unless you count local movement prediction as a core pillar of netcode
Because it's fucking is? Why do you think peekers advantage/dying behind corners is a thing in the first place?
Saying csgo is completely server-sided is just wrong.
Half of the things you listed, while useful, don't really fall into the "netcode" category.

Pimax makes very technically impressive headsets, but they're SHIT for the end user.
Shit quality, shit support, their lightest headsets are heavy as fuck, their smallest headsets are MASSIVE.
They're REALLY fucking cool on paper, and REALLY cool to stick your face into one (The Pimax Crystal is a hell of a thing).

Pimax headsets are like boats, you don't want to own a boat, nobody should buy a boat, but it's cool to have a friend who made that mistake themselves and lets you enjoy it from time to time.

That's pretty much it.
Sad part is the headset was real, and it was god damned good.
They overextended tremendously, realized they couldn't afford to do a Sony and lose shitloads of money on their headset in hopes of making it back later. Pushed anyway, and kept pushing, and tried to partner up with another company to manufacture it as a cost-saving measure. That also failed miserably. Tried to keep things under wraps while grasping for funds, "disgruntled" employees started saying the quiet part out loud, and it all fell apart.
Wasn't a scam, there was no cut and run, it was just a very poorly operated business that failed slowly.

Hyperdash was better for community organized lobbies. Local voice chat, quick respawns, competent bots and sometimes free to play.
Breachers is too competitive focused. No chatting with the other team at all, only being able to watch your teammates during the long downtimes, useless bots that put you at a major disadvantage and it all gets repetitive fast.
Somehow these are two of the most polished multiplayer VR games yet also the only ones I've bought to play with /vrg/ that I've not got much value out of.

It's a case of luck and yes most stuff doesn't really spawn outside of keycard rooms. You can make a decent living with the GPUs, food and attachments that spawn outside of it though. Outside, high tier armor spawns often enough, but only the tan helmet is routinely found. You're not gonna find many scars but you'll find M4s and good armor.

Fug, I was hoping it would open one of the secured areas that seem to contain solid loot

I ended the raid with 7 Fenix kills and 4 Ghost kills. That Bizon I picked up after killing a player with my 1911 who wasnt paying attention while looting the church off the bat, I took down a duo with an AKM I picked up off a Fenix, then finally the amour/helmet, Vector, and M4 all came from a kitted player I caught with his back turned to me while making my way to the boathouse extract. He was camping in the grass looking towards the area and I wanna say I dumped half of the 64 round Bizon mag to take him down

Sony makes the screens in the Vision Pro
Anonymous No.432833158
>>432829752
Sharp, Sony, and Samsung are leading the pack, no surprise there.
Sony is producing Apple's new "4K per eye" Vision Pro displays, and has licensed their display tech all over the place, they hold a lot of OLED related patents.
JDI, the Japan Display Company that was jointly formed by Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi, is one of the main suppliers of panels to Meta for their headsets.
BOE, Beijing BOE Display Technology Co, is also a supplier of panels to Meta.
In the past it's been reported Meta has worked with or been working with SK Hynix and LG Display to improve micro-OLED tech specifically with VR in mind.
JDI & Innolux last year started showing off their 3240x3240 ultra-high PPI (2016 pixels per inch, damn!) LCD panels designed specifically for VR headsets.
Samsung is in the process of buying out/merging with eMagin to leverage their tech for denser and generally "better" micro-OLED displays.

Anyway it's really neat that a lot of manufacturers are pushing for those since it'll be a net gain for consumers in the end when there's lots of competition. What I'm worried about is the fucking GPU market will never catch up to rendering those monstruous native res and we'll have to resort to upscaling fuckery
Anonymous No.432837026

Don't fret, GPUs are already keeping up, and proper foveated rendering makes those insane resolutions much more realistic.
Upscaling fuckery and fake-frames are a given, but at these insane resolutions they're less of issue, look at Nvidia with their DLSS and how it's FUCKING TERRIBLE at lower resolutions but practically invisible "free performance" at 4K.

I'm definitely not saying it's going to be super-easy no big deal at all, fuck no, it's still going to be high-end GPUs driving the high-end headsets.
The performance improvements for VR have been exceptional for these last few generations of both AMD and Nvidia offerings.

Motion controls are basic but they work and there's no manual reloading unfortunately. They've got some custom motions like pulling meds from behind your right ear, opening the map behind your left and to guard from attacks you put your two hands in front of your face.
The game looks fucking amazing in the headset and I manage to run it at 90fps @ 2750x2750~ per eye on my 4080 so that's nice too.

Alright motherfuckers it is that time of the week again! We are well into summer now as the waning up and downs of, well, everything is going on. Through the heat and changes that happen this time of the year we have the usual line up of Wish upon a Star and the general theme of beach outfits, both tasteful choices for avatar work.

Ghost of Tabor will be the game of the week again as the interest continues to be strong. Aiming to match other people up with people who don't have squadmates at the designated time. We always have this issue of people wanting to play, not enough willing to jump the gun and do their own lobby/group. 7pm PST 10pm EST, be there.

Dm *or reply* to the shop man if you have an urge to purge, know what the rot is, and wish to use fire.

Found a way to deal with desynced/spinning backpacks. Keep them on your back until you find a locker, then shove it in and use the restriction on movement for it to fix the offending items. In this case it was a glock looted from a player.

The best time was yesterday, second best time is today. It's great fun. The core gameplay loop is extremely solid, and the VR elements are well implemented if buggy. The VR combat also aims to nerf long range combat making for an experience where getting killed in unfair engagements is more a skill issue than bad luck.

For example this death; skill issue. I did not clear.

There aren't many places where you can do long range sniping anyway, lighthouse and church have poor coverage, hills are exposed and research rooftop can only cover boathouse. But there definitely are exfil campers that will go for 100+ shots so don't move in straight line if you can be seen from obvious sniper spots.

The more questlets there is the lower the general gear levels. USW and USE have lots of questlets that run around naked and pose no threat but they're more likely to be duping, EUR and SEA has lower amount of questlets so gear level is bit higher on average but the population is much lower so it's possible to not see anyone outside primetime. Any server outside USW tends to have squads moving around, USW is mostly solos for some reason.

Sometimes magazines glitch out in two ways when you return from a raid:

The first is that they will have no ammo despite having ammo before, but will still contain a few rounds in the magazine that's only use is to be pulled out.
The second is a variant on this where upon pulling the rounds out you discover that there are actually infinite rounds coming out.

I thought there would be a cap at 999 on the loader and wanted to just get a screenshot with it. Didn't actually do anything with these rounds except let them despawn, since there's pretty much no way to store that much ammo from the loader.

SKS will onetap even through altyn shield or twotap at worst into the helmet. Nigga in altyn and fort has FOV cut by 30% and can't aim properly. If the squad is split you can pick them out one by one easily. If they're not split they'll be moving slowly through one of the high value routes so just turn 360 degrees and moonwalk away to loot rest of the map.

The first problem is how it is going to look. They actually have to animate the hands holding two magazines, unlike H3VR where it just floats next to it. The second is how buggy magazines are already with them deleting ammo, refusing to go in the gun, getting duplicated in pouches, etc. and this will introduce the potential for even more bugs.

Training mode exists. Although you can't actually keep anything you extract with. Tabor feels like it would get dull without players anyways, the scavs are pretty easy to take out and not die to.

That said, I would love a single player extraction shooter for VR that was balanced to be single player. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1702840/Paradox_of_Hope_VR/ caught my eye but I haven't heard anybody talk about it here.

I pirated it, lomo.
You have no argument, you really let another man tell you what to believe without seeing for yourself that he's on babby difficulty.
No wonder why you mongs get manipulated by popstar politicians, as long as there's big text flashed in your face you'll believe anything.
Never mind the video creator also holds the opinion that FPS should never be in VR LMFAO.

we have people in the thread saying the video is falsified im sort of inclined to believe them over some random british youtuber

either way i don't know why its even a point of discussion if some early access piece of garbage is a super polished or not

the game looks awful whether its difficult or not

I'm not taking his words as gospel, it's literally a video. Video evidence. Excuse me for not believing a questie dogslop project somehow has an amazing ai hidden behind the tutorial and just made it braindead at the start.

It's not about piracy, either. Some people here don't have TIME to waste on dogshit, whether it's free dogshit or expensive dogshit.

Oh, if only we had a way to prove the difficulty he is playing at, something like a recording of a live stream, what a shame.
Oh, nevermind, we actually do have exactly that.
