Beyond first night impressions after an ~8hr session:
I learned my CPU is an even more terrible undervolter than I thought, thanks AMD. Unlucky with 7950x3d just like I was unlucky with my 5800x. Had to bump down undervolt to -15 all core since my first VR session on Windows in months had SteamVR freezing/recovering and a BSOD that mentioned a clock watchdog error. Was seeing new instability on Linux with 6.5.X kernels as well so I just have to accept that my CPU sucks at undervolting compared to revieiwer golden-sample chips!
Audio solution was https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Q2NMGL2/ and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09VSVH9F3/; I get a custom cable for my Sennheiser IE 200s tomorrow which will remedy my main complaint with this solution which was the long kz cable getting caught and tangled every single fucking time I put the HMD on. Speaking of which putting on and taking off a cloth strap HMD and an IEM with a long cable is a chore and a half but once its on you can just leave it alone and be comfortable. FiiO USB DAC ended up being REALLY loud with the kzs so I had to run at like 50% volume in SteamVR/Windows and had most VRC sliders go to 30% maximum. Mic defaults to 50% which people said was fine in VRC (100% volume set in VRC), 100% when I listened to it in Windows had a lot of background noise coming through. I may need to re-order the custom cable I got with a right-angle connector since that did make it easier to keep it off my face/ear with the way I was routing the cable form the aux port + FiiO DAC. I really hope the aduio strap is good.
OLED is great to have again. Went to somerandomguy's Justice concert last night and it was a great first testing of the HMD to observe nice pitch dark visuals combined with lots of small detailed flashing objects/lightshow effects. Definitely a sharp image and my initial optics impressions from just troubleshooting basically melted away as I used it.

The HMD is definitely light but im not used to how it fits on the head so I keep having to adjust it a little bit. I've heard from an early tester that it took ~1 month for them to get used to how it sits on their head so this tendency may go away for me over time. It's also probably a bad habit from wearing the Index for several years since launch. As commonly described, it feels like you're wearing swimming goggles.
I'm one of the people in the batch where the cable clip broke immediately in the back but they've said they'll ship free straps out to those who had that issue. I used two velcro straps in the meantime and those did a surprisingly good job at keeping the cable organized.
My unit has a stuck/dead pixel near the center of my left eye that I noticed in my initial testing but I can't say I was able to see it when playing for 8hrs last night, as its hard to find initially in a bright scene and then keep focus on to actually properly see it. This may go away over time if its just stuck rather than dead, but not noticing it is a good plus.
One big negative for me is my Index controllers when paired to the headset ALWAYS had drift or jitter and I had to keep re-pairing them last night hoping they'd get on one of my many HTC watchman dongles or a good Tundra 7-slot spot to finally cease the annoying drift. Haven't heard back about that issue but I only reported it to Bigscreen as of last night when I confirmed it happend with all 4 controllers in my active rotation when paired directly to the HMD's watchman dongles.

I also got mine yesterday, used for about 3 hours last night, just vrchat.

+ it is very small and light, even the cable is thinner than the index
- strap sucks. which is mitigated by the weight somewhat but it's way less comfortable than the padding and top strap on the index (even when it's carry the whole brick. I think they could've used a softer fabric, and at least some foam.
- if you put your hands up to adjust the headset, it will lose tracking temporarily. since it's so small your hands occlude enough of the sensors. which is just a minor annoyance for me but might make some dizzy when your view swims around.
+ the custom gasket blocks all light.
- no pass through and no nose gap so if you want to see anything irl, you have to flip them up (then readjust them back after)
+ small enough you can sip from glasses without taking the headset off.
+ screen is very crisp. no dead pixels on mine.
+ the fov is fine. even coming from the index I didn't feel like I was missing much, horizontal or vertical.
+ 72hz is fine for vrshat, since that's what i get on 144hz index most of the time anyway.
- the sweet spot is small. and at least for me I think they messed up the face scan. it's almost there but i have to shove my face slightly to one side to get everything crisp, and it doesn't hold it there by default.
- also the gasket is soft but not as soft as foam, so when you tighten the strap enough to hold the headset in place, it'll still leave marks in places on my skin. Will have to get used to it/better fit I think.
- glare is quite bad. If there's any high contrast in the scene, e.g. anything you'd want to show off OLEDS with, there's a blurry annoying reflection of anything bright mirrored around the center of view. I remember the OG rift had this too but it wasn't as bad (or the screen door + being new to vr made it less noticeable. subtracts from any immersion benefit you'd get from better resolution and less weight, sadly.

i did keep noticing that it was easy to keep 90hz in vrchat for once so maybe going back to that refresh rate isn't so bad... I'll say that when n 75hz mode I definitely noticed the afterimages of my controllers pretty easily

Kernel is fine, they are not letting pajeets touch it, because thankfully they realize that it's going to turn badly very fast if they do.
Don't get the hate about the search. Even without wrappers over direct filesystem calls, the basic explorer is useable. You just have to understand it once and after that it just works, amount of effort required is similar to solving just one issue on linux.

Standard in this example honestly looks okay since the face's vertex normals have been flattened. It's not ideal, but it's not terrible. It seems like silent's and poiyomi's are the most accurate to what you would expect, although I'm fairly sure they turned off clamping the brightness on purpose. So they can get too bright in bright scenes.

I think having custom normals for the face is a good idea regardless of the shader used when it comes to how shading is applied to the face. It isn't usually the same as what's automatically generated from faces for a 3D model. That and if anyone is not showing shaders, standard will look okay even if the shadow colour is too gray.

so playing (well, lying in a beanbag watching anime for 3 hours), It's growing on me a bit. I put the extra strap in the box as a over-the-head strap and helps a little bit, and it feels like my face has learned what the correct angle/position for the gasket is to get a sharp image. It is disappointing how finicky it is though, even when it's ostensibly customized for your face. And of course it's hard to tell if you're wearing it slightly wrong, or the face scan itself fucked up. I wish they would've sent like a few different alternatives with slightly different fits to try out.

The glare feels a little less jarring too after 3 more hours in. Still noticeable but it's more like a "well I guess this is how VR looks now" than an extreme annoyance. Funny how the mind can adjust so much. I now remember thinking back to the OG rift how the mura pattern was super annoying at first but also just became part of the look.

My audio situation with the hd280s is the worst part for comfort still. I used just the headset itself for a bit in the overlay and it's getting pretty comfy, but I need to get low-latency earbuds I guess to tide me over before the audio strap.

The AFK proximity sensor is still badly tuned. even when I feel like my view hasn't changed at all, the proximity sensor goes off. Hopefully can be fixed in firmware, but will have to turn off detection in vrshat in the meantime.

The headset still gets pretty hot, and the gasket rubber/silicone material doesn't wick sweat, just traps it. Which is bearable just sitting there watching stuff but I mean the cotton vrcover on the index. will try beat saber again soon to see how bad it is when really sweating. At least winter is coming.

So overall it's growing on me, definitely worth trying. but not a straight upgrade, as usual.

At what amount of candy props does it start to get laggy? I kinda like the thought of everyone gathering them up in some place, instead of running to the cannon and immediately using them up.

I didn't like the chicken and cannon gimmick much, last time. It does get people around the map, but it feels like you're just doing something on your own.

The candies are in the houses the house owner are the only ones that can hand them out. Each house has about 30 candies in them. They can be very generous or not but they only have 30 candies to their name. Once all pit of candy trick or treaters will just have to suck ot up that that specific house owner is all out of candies to give just like irl halloween! So there will be 300 candies in total between all the houses. Deliberating if it could be fun to have spare candies littered on the map not just in the houses. Maybe 30 spare candies as extras for a total of 330.

The undead chicken will have 300 HP.

We had 273 global eggs with their own unique textures during easter egg hunt with no problem frames wise. The candies will have only one texture GPU instanced. Or should we have a few different candies for flavor?

One cheap option is to buy used g27 shifter and use it with $20 converter, then you can go for an used T300 which is a very competent wheel, check your local used prices for that. Make sure to get 3-pedal version though, and realize that you're hitting a slightly higher price bracket here.

If not, old g27 won't really fail you (probably $100 used at this point), through drivers will sure be annoying in 2023. As anon said, used g29 is a sweet spot, all of the modern drivers, all of the old tech, in grand total it's a perfect starter's bundle.

Wheel is obviously a godsend for any car racing vidya, but DR2 does a really good job accommodating for gamepad players. There's some degree of smoothing to prevent absolute shitshow at high speeds, at low speeds it behaves mostly like GT7, including gentle countersteer management and whatnot. AC is nearly unplayable on gamepad, DR2 is a perfectly fine experience and you can enjoy rally feels without feeling like you're fighting controls all the time. Highly recommended, I mostly play with a wheel, but I've ran an event or two on gamepad and I had tons of fun.

It's also a good gateway drug, people who enjoy DR2 on gamepad will eventually come to a conclusion that it would be even more fun on a wheel, and then maybe they'll drop this not-so-insignificant amount of money on some nice one.

On a wheel, those minor corrections are replaced with force feedback, and then you have direct control over exactly how much do you want to correct. Obviously a more precise device, obviously feels FAR better to have your hands on a wheel while looking at hands on a wheel inside VR headset, but it's also priced somewhere around quest 2, which might not be to everyone's tastes and pockets. So, if someone would decide to join DR2 on gamepad to see if they like it, I'd say it's definitely the way to go.
