I've been thinking about getting an upgrade for my OG vive now that it has been like 5 years of regular use. Torn between a quest 2 or an index. On one hand I don't want to upgrade because I'm using it less and it's a fair bit of money for something that I'm not using outside of weekends. Open up Blender, buy or steal some assets from Booth, rip some assets from games, it's time to get world building. you have until December and the theme is winter, anything even vaguely winter themed is fine.
All skill levels are welcome. If you want to build everything from scratch, that's great, but if you want to use booth prefabs and just learn the basics, then that's okay too. There will be a hub world with portals so anyone can visit the worlds at any time but for the event itself the host will have pre-favourited the worlds so they can drop friends+ portals

Can I replace the straps on my OG Oculus Rift? In their entirety? They're breaking and falling apart and there's only so much tape can do. i figured out the solution to that problem of my avatar not following me around. turns out turning your spine into a physbone and just putting everything you dont want moving on the ignore transforms list doesnt really work. now i'll need to go back into blender and make a parent bone for the skirt since it was previously parented to the spine and i didnt want to make ten billion different physbone components.

SLAM is a solved issue. Camera tracked HMDs track perfectly basically, Quest Pro controllers track well, so why wouldn't small puck with IMU and pair of cameras track badly?

More than that, there is opensource library for SLAM: https://github.com/UZ-SLAMLab/ORB_SLAM3 you could take a raspberry pi, 2 cameras and IMU and make a tracker out of that.

All 'inside-out' headsets use IMUs and cameras so I'd expect it to perform similarly. Reviews said the HMD tracking on the Vive XR elite is similar or slightly worse than Quest 2 and most people don't notice the difference so that's what HTC is capable of.
Quest pro controllers are the gold standard for non-lighthouse but I don't have high hopes of HTC reaching that level.

You can do exact scaling in the blender UV edit mode by typing in the exact size you want after making an edit, a little box should pop up in the bottom left. For moving the UV I just hold CTRL or Shift while moving and it snaps into place pretty accurately.

Assetto traffic mods aren't advanced enough to really simulate driving in real traffic, but there are plenty of mods with normal roads instead of race tracks if that helps.
ETS2 and ATS do a better job with traffic, but they're not really meant for normal car driving. You can mod regular cars in, but I'm not sure how well that works.

You're going to want a VRChat account, could idle some in desktop now if you want to go ahead and get access to upload models, but you probably won't be doing that right away anyways.
Use whatever avatar you want for when you're starting out as long you're not a furry, but it's worth looking into uploading your own models too.
Also, wouldn't worry about dropping a bunch of money on a Bigscreen setup right away before you've messed around with VR much. There are plenty of upgrade options from an OG Vive if you end up liking VR enough to spend a lot of time in it.

Downloading now. I just finished playing the original for the first time, it's obviously full of '90s charm but I think the VR remake is poised to be one of the few justifiable remakes. Many of the original puzzles are boring, a lot of adjacent object-type puzzles, and it was annoying how some of the puzzles that took longer to solve meant hearing the same voice lines over and over again. That being said, I think the VR remake needs fun shortcuts to discover if it's going to be a faithful remake, and I dunno if they bothered.

Don't have anything specific, but there are plenty of avatar worlds out there. It's a good idea to check performance stats on anything you're using though, if it's too bad, some people might see you as a fallback avatar instead.

You can use the in game text box, you can use world pens if they have them, you can use avatar pens if you have one, you can come to the sign language meet and learn some basic sign language like the alphabet, you can just be expressive and not worry about communicating more detailed thoughts. About an hour in, I'd say it's definitely a very faithful remake. Still haven't seen the surreal kind of shortcuts I mentioned in >>450830907 but otherwise the execution is great, apart from the occasionally finnicky interactions (mostly when you're trying to grab and slide things along a path during puzzles). It really feels like the original if it were made today, while at the same time staying true to the original by including the cheesy FMV performances. The puzzles themselves so far are solid too, not as tedious as the original but reminiscent nonetheless, more varied and of course interactive thanks to VR. You can explore environments for coins to spend on auto-solving puzzles, which is a bit too casual in my opinion as I've already found a decent number of coins, but I guess that's par for the course with modern adventure games.

Just software. As far as I am aware they never updated the hardware for any of their headsets besides storage. The software is fine btw, I got my quest yesterday and I have been enjoying it quite a bit. The only thing I don't like about it is the short battery life and slow charge time. But I found I can use a power bank to extend the battery life. I think a battery strap would be a nice upgrade.

Just make sure to get your IPD right and don't tighten the strap too hard. Otherwise you'll get a headache within minutes.

Project Wingman had to get stripped down like hell and still ran at a blurry as hell resolution on the PSVR2 vs PCVR, apparently. The quest 3 is impressive, but I think we're not quite there yet to where you could easily strip down some PCVR games for it and not make a lot of compromises. Regarding traffic, I've mentioned or at least tried to mention that I'd be willing to host occasionally. My friends are too busy with their lives to play a majority of the time, and I suspect they don't really enjoy Assetto as much as I do for a few reasons - like they really hate having to manually download and install updates/mods every time (relatable), none of them have VR, most of them haven't got their wheel settings dialed in despite my best efforts to help them, etc. Anyway, I usually host SRP like almost everyone else. Sometimes Union Island or LA Canyons, I have configs for some touge maps as well but I need to update/test some of them too since it's been a while. Very recently setup for Targa Florio '73 with vintage '60s-'70s cars. It's definitely nice to be able to pick whatever cars and skins I want, and I'm willing to allow the same for you guys provided any mods meet current standards, primarily having LODs. It makes a difference, especially in VR. Not being able to get in touch with you guys outside of the server sucks though. Once wifi7 supported headsets release (QPro 2 would be the first one?), the wireless streaming would be pretty much solved.
10bit h264 4:4:4 at 800mbit/sec is virtually indistinguishable from a wired connection.
Add pancake lenses, add face and eye tracking and you are set.
We need just a couple of years more.

Two things worth considering that complicate this comparison slightly.

'10x' more sales on Steam but the store page doesn't have anywhere close to 10x as many reviews.

For games with physical movement and simple graphics like Gorilla Tag or NMR I'd rather play the standalone version than use a cable or have video compression. Got my Quest 3. Really enjoying it, the resolution and clarity are night and day compared to the 2. No more screen door effect, it's crisp as fuck. AV1 compatible for PCVR BUT also powerful enough to play standalone games that doesn't look like total horseshit. Now i'm just waiting for the fucking Bobovr strap adapter to finally get here.
