Good afternoon /vrg/.

Progress on my main projects has been stalling a bit recently, so I decided to take a break and work on something smaller. A side-side project if you will.

In the past I've toyed around with the idea of streaming some irl stuff, like project builds, to my world in vrc, but getting in vr to watch flat things has always felt a bit too regressive for my tastes.

To address this, I put together a system for streaming and rendering point clouds to vrchat. Point clouds are what they sound like; it's just a bunch of points. If you are confused watch the pic related which I feel is very self explanatory.

The core of it is simply streaming rgb video with a corresponding depth map. Additional metadata, such as camera intrinsics and extrinsics, are encoded in each frame in the form of colored tiles, using the codec scheme introduced in Lox9973's ShaderMotion project. You can see them there on the left because I was too lazy to mask them out.

Rendering is done via a geometry shader I wrote which decodes the frame metadata and then renders out a point cloud with all of the combined information.

The part with the most room for improvement is depth map generation. Generating (good) geometrically consistent depth maps in real time is quite difficult. Pic related benefitted from preprocessing time; real-time applications require tradeoffs in either framerate or quality.

It's a pretty simple concept, but I think there are a lot of potential fun use cases for this sort of thing.

This is the play for dream headset, which was basically the most promising headset at CES as it's a vision pro clone with controllers, it has all the bells and whistles like the vision pro, and its lightweight plastic. It should have feature parity with deckard, except that the play for dream is only using XR2 gen 1. It's $2000 and nobody beats china on price because they ride the margins for quality and have the cheapest labor force and can make anything at economies of scale. How is valve supposed to make the same thing with a snapdragon 8 gen 3 at almost half the cost. It's over.

With a 2.8" display, I think deckard can come in a budget and a premium display option. Normal oled doesn't have the brightness to get through pancake. I expect a fald miniled display like the quest pro so blacks and HDR can both be decent.

I wouldn't want to allow unsupervised file upload no matter what, even if it's just for appdata-mods that don't contain .dll melon injectables. We already had one guy who came over just to cheat around, admittedly he was kind of fun to have around overall, but I can easily imagine how bad it could be if everyone would automatically download malicious files. And even without that, I'm already testing every avatar before adding it to pack for unintentional issues, for example it's very easy to make your character immortal with one simple mistake in avatar script setup.

Still, I'm not really against the idea (supervised uploads though), and I also had it in my mind for a while. We'll see how it goes in the future.

One thing you could try is scripting rclone to automatically update syncing local mods with your pack, i.e. a bat file to run `rclone sync https://somegofilelurl C:\users\whatever\mods`. rclone does do some diff checking, so it could save download time for people that already have most of the pack, and smooth over unzipping things to the right directory.

You would have to split your uploads into individual files instead of zip files for this. Rclone works both ways though, so you could theoretically upload your mod folder with it. I dunno how generous the gofile is in particular, but rclone supports a ton of hosts so hopefully you could find one that works.

I'll consider that as an option, sounds reasonable. But I don't think of it as high priority, more of a fun little improvement if I'll have time and motivation one day. As it runs now, anons who join weekly get a small update package that contains only latest changes against previous week, so diff against any custom point in time would only help people who join every now and then. We have three packages, one is core mods that don't change, one is avatars and worlds that change weekly but weigh around 4gb (for people who join every now and then), one is tiny update with only latest changes. Even in bad case of someone getting a big pack every week, I don't think downloading ~4-6gb of data through the period of half a day is a big deal in 2025, at least anons keep showing up so it has to be good enough.

I picked it up when it was on sale and it's easily one of the best VR games out there and probably the most polished 2nd only to Half-Life: Alyx.

It doesn't do anything revolutionary other than barrow multiple mechanics from other VR games and weave them together smoothly.

The game's UI is all physical with a data pad you can summon and even hit enemies with.

Difficulty was pretty good, I died often and had to be cautious of pulling too much agro.

Typical small world with a lot of backtracking but the level design is good. Even when I'm back in a familiar place to combat is fun enough I don't mind.

Boneworks has a little more of a story while Bonelab is really more of a modding platform but aside from that they're very similar. I'd say they have pretty good gunplay and a lot of cool ideas that I certainly wish more VR devs would take inspiration from, you can tell it was a game made by people who not only play a good amount of VR but really want to put the tech to use.
