I could have gone to the very first meetup but avoided it for few weeks, then intentionally avoided drawing any attention after I did join for so long that I relegated myself to "background character everyone has seen but no-one knows". Today is happiest day I've had in recent years.

My amazing photographer friend, despite claiming to be busy, but he still spent nearly five hours staying up late to help me complete various photo shoots.

A Japanese friend I met just half a month ago but he gifted me a month of VRC+ to support me.
This feeling of being cared for and valued by non-family members is something I haven't experienced in so long.
On December 11 (28), 2024, amidst various voids in reality, I first opened this game and became deeply immersed. While it often brings me various emotions, most are negative, making me feel my efforts yield no returns - the saddest thing. But today, I feel needed, I feel valued, and I truly believe I can achieve the Happyend.

actually, just one thought, because everything else with the headset is honestly FINE. not even fine, i would even say pretty good.

its the DAMNED latency with pcvr. i swear to god, i played like 2 hours of pavlov just now and died like 200000000 times to some pro player that i normally would have AT LEAST dinked but because woopie doo there's 30/40 ms of latency he fucks me in the ass before i can even react.
very frustrating experience. another player in the match however, a friendly lad told me that with a good router and h264 settings i can get the latency down to 20ms. so far i only managed to average about 32ms. with all settings pivoted towards latency, so sacrificing image quality.
its a really nifty little thing, and i love it as a secondary luggable alternative to my index. but against the best players, this thing competitive is NOT.

anon, the newfriend i talk to on the daily has a wifi 7 router and has around 34ms vd latency which i average about 36 myself, with some fluctuation of around 12ms.

i did order it but i dont expect it to actually change much. the one thing i hope is for stutters to go away, as every couple of minutes, sometimes more often than that, sometimes less often, the stream will stutter and sound will stutter as well. im hoping to eliminate that with the new router. i dont think there will be much difference in latency however.

The Avatar Marketplace feels like an absolutely haphazardly thrown together disaster. This is the result of what they were working on for so many years with the creator economy?

First off, the elephant in the room. You don't get source files like you do on every other avatar purchase website, and no way to customize at all.
So this is now already leading to some creators just uploading a shitload of different versions with texture swaps like pic related which is both greedy on the creators part and a very dumb oversight on VRChat's part. But sure, the update is just for the dumb questies and roblox kids so lets ignore this glaring issue for now.

Secondly, there is no search feature. It's already obnoxious how there is still no search function for your own avatars, but they didn't even bother to implement it for the marketplace. Imagine if on Booth the only way to find things was to sort uploads by date added (ascending/descending) or name (alphabetically). Also the categories they have fucking suck, there's an anime section and a separate furry section yet there are tons of furry avatars in the anime section for no reason. That's just like furries to invade somewhere they're not supposed to be and start replacing it with their own.

Then for those of us who don't give a shit about this update at all and will never use the marketplace, it is now the default page whenever you click the avatars button instead of bringing you to your avatars. Brilliant.

I do actually recommend it at that price. It's not the deepest or most complicated dungeon crawler, but it is polished and the difficulty is well tuned somehow. You don't need a HOTAS at all, VTOL VR uses a virtual throttle and joystick that you use your VR controllers to manipulate. It's got good haptics and UX so that this is actually a really comfy way to fly, and furthermore you get a big clicky cockpit and MFDs to work everything.

All you need is a VR headset and controllers and you're set.

It was made by a flight sim guy who was was tired of having to guess at where his HOTAS buttons were while wearing a VR headset, so it's purely a virtual cockpit but with the majority of important real buttons. We should do the YA novel cliche where every few weeks/months we group up all the newfags and make them go through a series of coming of age trials.

Plus it'll help newfags develop a sense of self. For example if you join during a historic drought in newfriends then that's just part of your identity. If you join right when a flood of newfags all join then you're just one of the zerg rushers. As long as you get something like 5-20 per group and you do it once every few weeks up to maybe every 3 months then you'll be fine!

I distinctly remember having to ask how to get into the meetups back in 2018 because it wasn't really obvious from a few days of just lurking the thread.
Instance links make that initial part significantly easier even if they're missing out on the benefit of having anchors that were willing to be an entry point and show people around to some extent. I also do think anyone that joins anything with a posted link and actually tries to talk to the host can still get some of that experience.
I'd agree that we've gotten less newfag friendly over the years in a lot of ways, but I don't think that anyone that's put off by having to ask a simple question would've have had an easier time back then.
