I dunno if this was mentioned here yet, but I've got confirmation that the oculus quest has full body tracking via it's cameras.
Since the same tracking system will be on the rift S, that means that it's very likely a full body tracking driver for oculus will make it to openVR and steamvr, via cameras mounted on the HMD.
Dead and Buried for the Quest has this built in and the code will probably reveal some things if someone wants to dig into it.

No. I'm sorry, but that's just not how it works. What they did in that demo is likely not FBT of the kind we're used to seeing in VRChat. It's more likely that all it did was simply guess generally where the lower body as a whole is located. Because of occlusion issues, it would be pretty much impossible to track the actual locations of the feet, and it would also be very hard to discern even the rotation of the hip, if it's not obscured by clothing.

It tracks your body when you look at your body or when someone else looks at your body. It's not going to track if no one is looking: it uses facebook's pose estimation tech to put your body where it actually is when it's being looked at, and it won't be available at launch.

just go to their website, it's really new and not targeted at the public, but I've used it and I've been spoiled ever since. The colour is fucking incredible.
It's the only dual AMOLED HMD (no pixel ghosting) with proper non fresnel optics at 200+ deg fov using steamvr tracking, and it's 90fps, unlike pimax which struggles to achieve that on the worse looking 8k.
The screens are easily half the cost, it's like an overclocked galaxy s8+ screen, it has eye tracking and a foviated rendering driver built right into the display chain.
It even adusts your ipd for you when you put it on, and it weighs 450grams. I'm not entirely sure how they pulled it off but it feels like wearing a hat.
It's also the only hmd that supports SLI, you can put two RTX cards in a system and get a dedicated gpu for each eye.
I wish I could afford a setup like that.

naw, with single pass stereo it's fine. If people can drive a 4k 120hz screen with a single gtx 1080ti, you can do vr these days since the resolution is usually lower.
Basically it's up to the game itself. Apex legends frame capped off can hit like 1000fps, and if your vr game uses the same graphics as that, you can lock 90fps these days.
The sad truth is that unity and unreal are really slow for vr unless the developer takes the time to optimize the game. Right now software is lagging behind the hardware, that's all.
Single pass stereo fixes a lot of the issues older games have.

Also, we already know they're working on FBT using cameras. It's just that there aren't any products announced yet, nor that we can expect being announced on the horizon. However, they may give FBT around the time gen 2 rolls around, by giving us a Kinect-like add-on. There is a lot of potential for actually high quality and low latency FBT using cameras, but it'll take a lot of software and maybe hardware development to get there.

If you're going to get one, get something that will last you for the rest of your life or at least 5-10 years and a new pc.
The most important thing you can do is use DAC isolated ports on your motherboard, or something that is nicely grounded and ioslated in the first place.
You also want something that has decoders in it, because if you're going to get a sound card, get a sound interface. If you just need a clean mic, just get a cheap usb adapter, but I assume you want something to make your voice sound like butter.

it has, by leaps and bounds in the last 3 to 5 years. 384kbps 32bit DSD decoders/encoders on SOC with microsecond accurate clocking is the norm now on dedicated audio hardware, with removible and customizable tube and OP amps to enhance headphone/studio monitor sound profiles with precise isolation.
this little motherfucker pictured does 32Bit/768kHz and DSD at the highest rates possible.
The audio hardware that can even CAPTURE at those rates is commonly found in studios more and more.

you're exactly right. If you're required to turn on boosting to get sound out of it on your mic, your mic has too much resistance to work without an amp (actually, all good mics really do need to be behind an amp or have a preamp in between). Consumer processors tend to be pretty noisy.

You can use the umc22 as your headphone amp too, and I bet it'll sound better. Internal sound cards are not all that good anymore, sadly. Since usb 3.0 we can shove enough data down the pipe now so there's no latency, which removes the need for pci-e.

And yeah, good condenser mics need phantom power, that's your problem.

They were developed with podcasting and interviews in mind where they're going into something like a TascamDR-05.
My audio experience is all live recording, so that's precisely the kind of thing those are used for, usually there's an audio interface in between and you're setting EQ levels for the speaker every single time.
They have a lot of Ohm resistance (a good thing) and don't really work directly into a pc unless your pc has a mic preamp, and most don't.
However, it sounds silly, but you might wanna try plugging it into the front panel onboard audio.
They often have a +5 boost.

the UMC22 while being a cheap as dirt audio interface has one thing going for it, which is a modern MIDAS microphone preamp on chip.
It's only 48khz though, keep that in mind. If you're recording uncompressed however, that can sound fine- it's still "prores" or above cd, which samples at 41.
I do live concert recordings a couple times a year at 96khz/24, which is VERY high for linear pcm. Remember that mp3 kbps values don't translate to recorded audio sample rate.

The higher bitrates matter when the audio coming in is very complex, like multi-instrumental live recording and a wide range of sound from 0-20khz and beyond or you're making a Hi-Res for listening. It would be more than fine.
Sounds like you just need a little battery powered preamp or something.
Something like a cloudlifter but cheap would do the trick.

mmm, that depends. Personally I think your issue is line noise from your pc on the pci-e sound card and the fact that you have to +100. The sound card expects amped sources in the first place. A mixer is what us audio heads put everything through first, and the final capture on a fairly high fidelity card.
To be clear, most prosumer audio interfaces these days just happen to provide both basic mixing and also usb as a sound card because a lot of people do things on laptops on stage, and internal recording interfaces can be noisy. Having it outside the computer on low voltage dc allows them to control any ground loop noise and is just better.

you don't need phantom power, now that I know you have a panda, you just need a preamp with clean gain.
I assumed you were using a shock mount condenser mic like I do.
Don't confuse terms. 20khz sound frequency is not the same thing as "48000khz 24bit" . 96K recording will give to a 48KHz BANDWIDTH... no cheap monitor/headphones can reproduce that and to top it off human hearing max's out at 22K if you haven't lost ANY hearing.

the difference however is FIDELITY, or how many points of volume per second the system can record, which is why 196/24 is the gold standard for studio masters.
Remember that an analog recording is essentially infinitely high quality. When you convert sound digitally, you have to seperate the audio stream into these tiny little "chunks" and 24 bit audio is 24 chunks per X and 32 is 32 per x and so on. The Khz rating in sound cards is the oscillation frequency of a literal crystal- and determines how many bit chunks per second you get, and therefore how accurate to real life the playback sounds.
Digital Audio is very, very complex. I have 20 years practical experience with it however and it's part of my job. It's pretty funny that you, somehow, have stumbled upon me in a thread dedicated to VR.

A 60$usd internal sound card is going to be able to reproduce some amazing shit if you can get a clean signal to it. You really do just need a preamp/mixer. I know you're not doing any "mixing" but that's what you need - something to handle the analog part of the audio for both your headphones and mic.
My advice is either to replace your sound card completely with a nice device that is both a mixer and external sound card (a dac, like a focusrite scarlett or one of the others we mentioned that does 192/24bit) or get a mixer/preamp device, because either of those solutions will last you beyond this computer and that sound card and into the future, even a cheap one.

I have the behringer um2. It's weird. most of the time is sounds fine, and definitely better than the mobo soundcard wrt noise, but about once a night, I suddenly get really bad artifact noise, like a buzzing in one ear that either lasts for 10 minutes then goes away, or I unplug the um2 from usb for a second and plug it back in. It might be a weird usb controller issue (i've also got rift + trackers), but still annoying.

If you don't need an actual XLR input with phantom power, I'd get one of the ultra cheap chink tiny usb sound cards with 2 3.5mm ports (in/out) on it first and see if it's good enough for you. It'll solve the mobo noise at least. If you see yourself wanting XLR at some point, then um2 is still cheap enough to try, but not perfect.

Some other odd parts of the um2: I can't get simultaneous input and output unless it's through the asio4all driver. using WDM from audacity just errors out that the device isn't responding. asio4all works fine, but you have to use something complex like banana or sar.audio to get it back into actual games. Might be some windows 10 bug, since um2 is pretty old.

also while i'm complaining, I could never get the um2 to get input from super cheap 3.5mm lav mics (the $5 for 3 amazon ones). Not even a quiet input, just no input at all. Yet um2 works fine with an actual xlr dynamic mic (behringer's sm58 clone). the cheap lav mics work fine with my mobo soundcard other than noise, so I'm not sure what's up.

If you like rhythm games, beat saber is a fantastic one. If you like multiplayer FPS, pavlov/contractors are worth trying. If you like table tennis, eleven is a great sim. And a new addition to my personal recs, ultrawings is a fun little non-combat flight sim that feels shockingly complete for a VR game. like there's actual progression and difficulty instead of a 2 hour tech demo. I'm 5 hours in and still only about 40% done with all the challenges. They're a little samey after a while, but I keep coming back.

Last i tried, recroom makes you do this stupid 5minute tutorial when you first load in, so get that done first. There's also a battle royale thing that supports up to 18 people even.
