You can run the unity profiler at runtime, but it requires a dev build of vrchat, and of course has some overhead from profiling itself. It would be interesting for the devs to pull random samples of avatars, load them into a map, simulate some IK inputs/gesture toggles over the network to move dynamic bones, and take profies. You could plot CPU frame time per avatar vs poly count, material count, dynamic bone count, some hash of the shader code, and all the other parameters, then train a SVM or other ML model to predict the CPU frame time for a given avatar.

With that model, you could then bin-pack avatars/components in a room by estimated CPU time, up to your given desired frame rate. First fill friend's avatars, then important components like the main mesh renderer, etc etc, and disable all the rest. Wala.

I gotta say, wasn't expecting Walking Dead:S&S to run a locked 90fps on my 1060gtx on a mix of medium/high settings. Props to the devs for knowing how to use UE4 I suppose, unlike every other VR dev in 2019 with that or Unity.

It's giving me a decent immersive-sim fix that I didn't know I was needing until my backpack was full. Only thing I wish was in the game (after 4hrs of play) is an option to just hover your backpack in front of you so you can manipulate shit without having to free up both hands to grab something from it.

It does a good amount of environment VR interactions without going full Boneworks which I like, unlike Alyx which is the complete opposite with the forced teleports or ladder assistance.

Just wish the actual maps were larger, but that's probably part of the reason why I can run it with zero performance hiccups. I might be able to afford the Rift S in the next couple weeks, not really feeling the save up for the index. How is it? I'm only used to 1080p 60Hz so I'm not a huge graphics snob, but I think smoothness is my biggest concern (I don't get motion sickness ever, minus RE4 on PC for some reason...). I have a GTX 1080 (not TI) and Ryzen 5 3600 so I think I'm good on the specs side of it (?). Most people don't notice a difference between 80 and 90, and 90 was the standard for a while, so I don't think you'll have a problem with smoothness.

Your specs will be fine for the rift S. I personally have the index, and going from the rift CV1 (90hz) to 144hz, it's definitely smoother, but you get diminishing returns. Having 144hz is nice in eleven table tennis for seeing the ball, and in beat saber it feels more smooth, but the games are still perfectly playable at 90 (or 80hz on the rift S).

Boneworks can be a really punishing first VR game if you're susceptible to motion sickness. Stick to alyx, or other no-locomotion games like beat saber until you feel up to it. Pavlov is less bad than boneworks, but the smooth locomotion gets some people still.

I think the Rift S is the easiest and most cost effective option to get into VR right now. The other option worth considering is the Quest, which can also play PCVR games. If you see yourself liking the mobile/wireless part of the quest or the hand tracking, it might be better. It does have a worse 72hz refresh rate though, so maybe not if you're sensitive to smoothness.

Oh, another thing is that the Rift S doesn't have hardware IPD adjustment, while the quest does. So if your IPD isn't in the Rift S range, might also be worth getting a Quest instead. Or an HP reverb, or refurbished CV1.
