Steam Lunar sale started. Any recs for VR games? New to the experience and was waiting for a sale to tank up on things to do. This is what I was thinking, since I've already got Project Wingman.

Pavlov is good for making friends, people in zombies maps are usually very friendly and down to chat since it's PVE. Beat saber's multi is good, I met some friends there but you can't communicate ingame so you gotta add them through steam if you wanna connect.

Make sure you check your inter-pupilar distance and compare it to the range the headset has before you buy. Most have an IPD slider but some don't or don't allow fine changes. It's really important for image clarity.

Easiest is bigscreen VR and mpv or whatever regular player you use (bigscreen just mirrors your desktop). Has nice dynamic lighting of their environments.

Second easiest is an overlay like desktopplus or XSOverlay in the game of your choice, vrchat for the most map variety. No interaction between the video and the environment though.

Medium hard mode is vrchat video players, which you can get the nice dynamic lighting, but you have to transcode the video to bake in subs, and host it over http to get it to load (localhost is fine, or Dropbox if you're not smart enough for that).

you should check out the ranked maps because they have a star rating which is the most convenient way to quantify difficulty. today we had 2 sessions, one was easier around 4-5 stars, second was harder at around 8 stars. Official expert+ songs are poorly mapped but if I had to guess the OST packs X+ would be around 3-4 stars, camellia is hard to say because in the OST it's not difficult just very poorly mapped and that's why it's hard.

In any case feel free to join us next time, let us know that you're not as experienced and we'll play easier songs with you.

1. I'm going to be editing a very simple mesh but it has two maps made for it that came with the avatar (I think normal and specular). I presume those will have to be update/remade, but how exactly is that done? Preferably I'd want to keep it looking similar to the original in terms of those, it's just that the shape will be a little bit different.
2. What's the best way for working with textures? There's a pattern on my clothes that I'd also like to make small changes to, so I imagined it would just need texture editing, just looking for some sensible way to go about it since I've heard people don't use Blender for that all too often.
3. Is there any decent guide on fitting clothes to an avatar in case of differing proportions?

I don't understand what these indie devs are thinking, opening the game with a pre-rendered CG video and having an awkward teleport-only movement system

Anyone know if you can spawn a prop on your avatar that's static in position? Eg. I'd like a chair I can spawn while sitting on my RL seat, and it just remains there relative to the model so I know where my damn chair is without having to lift my headset to see.

Hell even some steam vr overlay equivalent would be nice.

You'd be surprised how easy it is to get better at beat saber. Play an hour a day and you'll probably play one star higher every 1-2 weeks. Also play ranked maps, they have much better mapping usually and are much more easy to learn from

1. You'll need to configure the materials/shaders in unity. Most textures that come with models will work fine with the common shaders though.
2. whatever 2d image editor you prefer will work fine, and blender texture paint mode can be good enough for simple edits. I think most people use substance painter for 'real' edits, but it's expensive so i've never bothered.
3. I don't know a specific guide, but I usually just use a lot of proportional editing if it's loose clothing, or shrinkwrap if it's form-fitting, then transfer the weights.

If you are using SDK3 then just apply a toggle on the worldspace gameobject itself to turn it on and off. Everything else is the same as sdk2. it's quite easy thanks to this guy

Ultimate Edition is definitely worth getting for Assetto since it's only a little more. A lot of the DLC cars are nice to have, and some mods require them.
You can pirate all of the DLC if you really want to save a few bucks, but some people have issues with the unlocker. You might as well just pirate the whole game though if you're going to do that since pirate copies work online.

I got one recently and I'm enjoying it... But as usual none of it was as straightforward as I hoped.
If you get a quest 2, bare in mind you'll probably want to get a good faceplate for it too. The default one is mad uncomfy unless you have the exact face shape for it and even then...
Also things like a battery pack, if you intend to use it wirelessly and a good router setup to use virtual desktop if you want pcvr.
Or, you can get an appropriate cable, but then you'll have to set up a proper pulley system (they're relatively cheap) to keep the wire out of the way.
There are some great games. Half Life Alyx is probably the best single player VR I've seen so far. It's well polished, full story, great design and gameplay but makes most other titles look like cheap, janky shit. The games are also generally way overprice for what they are. That said there's some great multiplayer stuff out there. Pavlov, onward, pokerstarz... All good fun IF you can find good people to play with. Standalone quest MP is literally full of little kids. I can play a whole day of onward and guaranteed that every lobby has at least one squeaky <10 year old in it. They really like to shoot their own teammates.
PC VR multi is better, but it's still full of absolute fucking retards. There are some good dudes on there though and if you friend up with them you can have a lot of fun.

TL:DR if the cost isn't going to ruin you, there's some great VR stuff out now and coming out soon but the tech is moving fast so if it's not something you really want to get into now, you might as well just leave it for a couple of years.

It'll take a few years but it'll happen. Quest 2 has sold like hotcakes to a fairly varied demo. As the next iterations improve on the visual fidelity and the library expands more AAA devs will start to see the writing on the wall and start making games for it, or at the very least adding VR support for their flat titles out of the box.
I think maybe 10 or so years from now VR will have become the norm for most gaming... Even if it's just sitting with the headset on and playing games on a controller.

The index is the best choice if money is no object.
The main issue is in fact that the pc needed to run it should be pretty good, and you need to use lighthouse going forward.
The Quest 2, however, has the same if not better visual quality and spatial tracking, is lighter, is 1/3 the cost for 3 pt tracking and runs PC VR just wonderfully over Virtual Desktop and a wifi 6 router.
The cable setup from facebook, however, is complete garbage. Only virtual desktop and 802.11AX make the quest 2 a great experience, and you need a decent pc that can encode 4k video faster than 90fps and with less than 1-3ms latency.

The one combination I might recommend over the index is a Vive Pro or Cosmos Elite plus a set of knuckles.
The issue with going quest 2, as nice as it is, is the cost to go full body later.

this is a feature, base stations to inside out is like a mouse to a controller. Also 72hz mobile games are an abomination, the cpu in the quest toasts your face and it's performance is a catastrophe, 4 year old gear vr with my galaxy s8 was basically the same experince, not sure why someone would pay multiple hundreds of dollars for it.

But, before you jump in be aware of the following problems that exist with the valve index.
1. there is an internal usb adapter hub that straight up fucking breaks with no driver in windows, and this will always happen and there's nothing you can do about it.
2. the glue on the inside of the rubber eye tubes will get gross and fuck up the lenses making them smearing. This is not a huge deal, just be careful when cleaning (don't press down on the lens, hold them from the sides.
3. Overtighting the head strap can cause the head strap to straight up smash the spring loaded stuff right out of the side of it. They'll rma this, but it sucks
4. Stick drift. This is happening less and less on later models but they'll almost always rma it. DO NOT use stick press down for any reason at all, ever, and try not to jam directions really hard if you don't have to.
5. Firmware loss on the controllers (rare, but it happens)
6. you can break the ear speakers really easily since they are screwed in, and that will rip the cables right off from the contact point. They were not smart enough to make sure that section was also press fitted separately, maybe in the future.
7. Lighthouse 2.0 motors can die pretty easy, make sure they're mounted securely. Having sympathetic vibration will kill them sometimes.
8. The cable can die pretty easy and it's an OCuLink but customized so it cannot be easily replaced.
9. There is no way to buy the replacement power adapter for the 3in1 cable. Write down the voltage and amperage so that you can buy a universal if you need to replace it.
10. The clip on the side of the headset for the display and usb cable will snap off. Glue it back on and put a zip tie for good measure.
11. The redirection clip at the back of the headset to keep the wire behind you will snap. Replace it immediately or ziptie the cable so you don't pull on that sensitive bend, or it will break.
