Respostan. I played a bit of Swords of Gurrah today and actually liked it quite a bit. It seems to do PVP melee fighting the best out of all the VR offerings I've seen. It has PVE modes and more complex maps as well. For what I payed for the humble bundle I have no regrets.

Strap has been fine for me. Face pad is workable but a better one does help. There's somewhere on the oculus support website where you can claim the foam is giving you skin issues and they'll send you one of the good interfaces for free. If you don't want to do that, they cost $30 and are pretty nice.

So what steps are necessary, from unboxing the quest 2 to playing a game? There's apparently a program called virtual desktop or something, and there's something called ivry on steam. Not sure which to use. Are they even necessary anymore, since there's this thing called air link or something nowadays?

The main issue for me is that I use a Quest 2, and even if a USB3 Oculus Link cable is used, the battery drains faster than the USB can charge it because it's using part of the cable to deliver video. So if you have a good 5GHz wireless connection then you can just use the long Link cable to plug it into the charger in the wall which will enable it to be used without running out of battery.

Outside of it there's quite a few enough for a thousand hrs of gameplay without touching VRchat. But I prefer to use it on VRchat. You get used to the wires after a while but wireless is indeed top notch immersion.

I played through Organ Quarter, which is about 9 hours, Alyx was 10.8 hours, I've played a bunch of multiplayer and I'm looking forward to playing more No Man's Sky when the big multiplayer update hits.

Depending on what you're into in singleplayer, there's also Cosmodread, Compound, Superhot, Boneworks, and a variety of other bigger and smaller experiences. H3VR is a nice gun sandbox and I've probably played almost 80 hours of that.

Drowning in anime tiddies is really more a choice than a last resort.

I know this is only tangentially related and i'm not sure any of you will be interested but CIG, the company behind Star Citizen, is developing some pretty interesting face and eye tracking that works with really low resolution cameras. No setup of any sort just turn the setting on and not only does it track your mouth for speech and shit but it's tracking your whole face well enough to pull funny faces and shit, shapes that you wouldn't really expect it to deal with.

Of course, being star citizen it is glitchy and broken as fuck and either works well or doesn't work at all. But it's interesting technology.

It could be. Even as someone with no experience developing and shipping hardware of this type I can think of several issues it'll likely run into.

First and most damning is he's just Some Guy™ meaning he'll get fleeced on manufacturing and parts sourcing costs, so even if he made e.g. a kickstarter or indiegogo to fund properly-made units, they're going to be fairly expensive. Maybe not Vive tracker expensive, but certainly at a price that will cause people to think twice depending on overall performance.

Second, due to how they work, drift probably gets comparatively worse based on how far the sensor is from the headset, because he's using a skeletal forward kinematic model (e.g. if the hips are drifting, since the ankles compare their position to the hips, they will drift even more, etc.). I'm not sure if it'll be better or worse if you're not moving much, as I'm not super familiar with how good IMUs are at judging movement, but since they don't even reference off of each other via e.g. EM sensors like NoloVR uses then you can bet every little bit is going to compound.

Next is initial setup will be a pain since, based on how he explains it, they reference themselves off of a skeletal model you have to set up, which is then linked to the headset position to extrapolate the rest, this means you need to know not only how far each sensor is from the next (and in turn from the headset) you also need to make sure you wear them the same each time, or that creates additional inaccuracy.

Basically pretty sure it's gonna be jank regardless, and unless you like tinkering and already have a 3D printer or such, it's gonna be expensive and hard to buy, if it even makes it past an initial run via indiegogo/kickstarter at all.

Yeah, they shatter on hit and then reform. You can hold down the trigger on smaller weapons to harden them so they don't break when parrying, but they can't do damage in that state. Similarly the closer to the hilt your blade is shattered at the quicker it reforms. Both are ways to do quick counter attacks after a parry. Long hafted weapons can't be hardened, but their hafts are perma-hardened. It's an interesting compromise over full knockback physics as in Blade & Sorcery to make swordfightan work in multiplayer

I think there could be ways to mitigate drift to an extent through some affordances in software and making assumptions about the system. For example we know that you can't bend you knees more than 180 degrees out, so we could cancel out drift when the shin would move beyond what it should. We also know the shin can't bend into the negative orientation such that your shin would end up in your thigh, so we could do compensation there too. There might be other things we can assume and do for the other bones, especially when we have the headset and hands as absolute things to work off of. The ground as well if you calibrated it correctly in SteamVR.

I'm not sure about the specific positioning problem you're talking about. In theory, we don't need to position the IMUs specifically because they measure the same rotational values no matter where they are on the limb. If your leg is straight and it measures a 0 degree rotation at the base of your shin, it's still going to measure that at the top.

The only bone that a skeletal model reference would help with is the hip, since that's not directly connected to your head. I'm assuming it's not going to be able to estimate hip position at all if you do something like move your head side to side while keeping everything still. It'll use a model like how the DK1 use a neck model to better approximate head turning. For the hips it'd be the same thing, but probably it's not going to be precise tracking even if you very carefully set it up and calibrated it, so you probably wouldn't need to be precise about positioning it either.

It really depends on the IMU. I don't know if the one he'll use is good, but IMUs in 3DOF headsets have been able to not drift for huge time windows before.

Kinda. It really feels like nobody's willing to be the first to go "all in" for full body tracking, probably because so few titles support it, but it becomes a sort of catch-22 in that way. Even the few working on it that are actually backed by any sort of established company all have a fallback/fail-safe. Tundra is essentially just making new vive trackers, so they can fall back on all the original uses of those, that one VR suit company is just stapling FBT to their haptic suit, and even KatLoco focused on shitty locomotion schemes rather than actual tracking.

First "real game" in vr for me
Heres how I feel. Really amazing start, clever implementation of gear and weapons. Very immersive. Visceral feel to violence that made me recoil a bit and feel bad.

About 4 hours in and I have my VR sea legs. I realise the game is actaully very, very, very easy. The Tourist is a juggernaut to anything but explosives, which enemies never use. I can waltz into just about any fortress with a spoon and murder everyone inside. Looking at drawings is annoying just sweep everything. I now have piles of ammo and use guns just for fun. I use arrows for fun. Just when I think maybe the game will offer some new challenges, nope suddenly it's over in an anti climactic conversation where the lives of characters I don't give a single fuck about are on the line. Shoot one and oh suddenly the game is over.

Left me feeling like the game is blatantly unfinished and like it could have done so much more. Like a lot more. No missions variety. In the end I feel like I had fun but am being extremely lenient due to the fact that it's a vr game. Is that what I'm in for with vr?

I have a copy on my quest 2, but i primarily intend to use it for pcvr and i was thinking of refunding and getting it through steam. I am unfamiliar with the quest version, however you'll always have more control over a program on your PC. There's quite a few hoops you need to jump through to get things to run smoothly on phone hardware and I'm sure it's a hassle to get the mods onto the quest in the first place.
