Excuse the wall of text but could use some help, especially anyone knowledgeable about the HTC Vive. I'm not sure what's happened but my VR is just suddenly fucked up out of nowhere. I logged in tonight and VR Chat even in just my default empty home world was barely getting 15-20 FPS and everything was choppy/laggy like crazy, which is unheard of (that only happens to me in really full worlds). I also noticed that just the regular steam VR opening page thing with the background was also being a bit choppy, I didn't think much of it and just restarted my PC assuming it was too many background things running or whatever..

but no go. I tried Alyx and the same thing, it's laggy, choppy as hell. My VR was working just fine like 5 days ago when I last logged in. I happened to have a new in box HTC vive cable set that I bought in preparation for when the inevitable cable failure happens so I tried it out..and nothing, the cables aren't the problem the brand new cables gave the same results.

It's not like my CPU died over night or something as my PC is still running. I even opened up VR Chat in desktop mode and it runs perfect with no lag/choppy so this is only in VR. What exactly is happening? is this a sign that my headset is itself is just suddenly having a failure? I'm going to be really upset if I have to shell out money for an entire new VR Headset, but idk how else to troubleshoot this sudden lag shit or what's even causing it.

I think I remember someone else having this same problem years ago. They rolled back driver updates and steamvr updates and nothing worked at all. They suffered for like a month and then it magically fixed itself again. Really weird and was entirely a "works on my machine" issue. Give reinstalling your drivers and steamvr a try and see how it goes. It won't be the cable I can at least tell you that much.

I'd advocate a "try before you buy" model with booth simply because the quality can be really hit-or-miss, especially with clothes meant for certain bases that end up just clipping anyway that you can either fix or just give up on
