These kickstarter memes from 3 years ago finally got here today, etee controllers. They're pretty mediocre so far.
pros:
no joystick to drift
about 30 grams lighter than an index controller
finger tracking is pretty accurate when calibrated, better individual fingers than the index
you can detach the steamvr tracker ring and use it as an awkwardly-shaped tracker for legs or whatever
tracking is just fine, as good as index controllers, tested on beat saber
build quality feels fine, nice grippy rubber, not chinky (though chinkware it is)
cons:
not comfortable. the knuckle guard is simultaneously too loose and too tight, and not easy to adjust like the index strap. I am very used to the index controllers after 3 years however, so some bias.
no physical buttons. you can assign the different touch points like the glowing thing on the front and the side of the tracking ring to actions in steamvr bindings, and it works okay, but it's not the same. the top of the stick itself is a touchpad which you can map to a joystick, but it's extremely sensitive. I haven't figured out how to give it a minimum pressure threshold before it outputs a joystick direction.
slightly easier to occlude the smaller steamvr tracking ring than the index thing
it sometimes loses finger tracking calibration, but unlike the index where it's just an annoyance until it resets, since it's emulating the button presses with finger tracking it breaks inputs until you recalibrate, which you do by pressing the power button at the bottom twice (a 2 handed manuever).
Welp. I backed these when I was super into beat saber and it was a bummer going from the perfect rift touch controllers to the huge index controllers, and I thought these would be good for that, but I rarely play now. I was also hoping they'd be lightweight enough to be less annoying for social vr shit, but they're bad for joystick locomotion. Maybe fixable in software, but disappointing so far.
