I think the motion sickness problem can be solved by designing games differently. Physically moving around and using hands/body to control things doesn't have the same negative effect, but that to work at scale devs will have to rethink how people interact with game spaces. Imagine a game that takes place in a series of small rooms, for example, or where the player wouldn't move around too much, which is how commercial VR spaces handle the problem - players are usually on an elevator or moving platform or there are distinct "scenes" during the 15-20 minute experience.

It's been a while since one of my long pointless blogposts but anon is my one true friend and I like to give him a pointless soapbox from time to time. Sometimes I really wish I had more time and motivation to catalogue worlds more. Over the years I've gone through thousands of maps easily and saved a bit shy of a thousand or so but for every map I've saved I probably don't save 5-10 at least. Many of those maps I never save aren't bad they're just not ideal for running around with a medium sized group to look at usually due to being too compact/short/unperformant/download size being astronomical. It feels kinda melancholic seeing some of these interesting worlds because so many are just forgotten. Sometimes I'll come across forgotten gems, large beautiful maps from 2018-2019 unbroken by updates or quietly fixed by their creators with hundreds of thousands of visits only for them to now sit dormant seemingly untouched for weeks or months at a time while they had hundreds of concurrent players at their peak. I think it's become one of my strangest and persistent reminders of the passage to time, seeing places where people gather by the hundreds of thousands slowly go quiet and fade from memory. Moving on to new maps isn't a bad thing inherently but the limited favorites and inconvenience of having to use things like vrcx or personal resources to catalogue maps means that when people start bump them off their favorites as time passes to replace them with newer maps they might as well have ceased to exist due to how poor the world discovery in place is. Even the maps that I have kept on my 400 available favorites slots I could point to memories on nearly all of them. Scrolling back and seeing lesser remembered maps or even iconic maps all slowly in memory decay. It gets harder to remember without looking back through logs and pictures every day that passes.

I remember Margarita Mondays on Serenity Cove drinking too much and staying up too long. I remember sitting in the hottub with friends in a HOUSE OF ΡΣΕ on my birthday just enjoying existing. I remember my retinas getting scorched by TECHNOVINEGAR and shivering when I watched The Edge and all of Gyle's Animation worlds for the first time. Sitting in Tanuki Tunes surrounded by friends listening to my favorite Android52 album and everything just felt right. Flying around Abstract:Echo with the stupid gliders and sitting out on the top of the bridge chatting with the few other people autistic enough to fly out there as well. Spending an hour climbing The Tower of Worth then briefly saying high to a few people and jumping off the top because who's going to stop me? There was Kepler 452b, a fairly insignificant map with a skybox and lighting that just felt right enough to make me sit down and reflect on life for a while. Doing the puzzles in gumball lounge 3.0 just to crash and do them all over again. Watching one of our goofballs do coke off random booth ass in Riverside Bungalow. So many pleasant nights falling asleep in that cozy room in Winter Company. Every month I go through my favorites and see another random map was set to private, removed, or broken by an update.

The memories remain and I try to keep them alive inside myself but I know eventually some of these worlds will slip off my favorites and finally to the back of my mind. Realizing it will all fade from me eventually was initially excruciating but over time I've slowly come to terms with it. I try to take a lot more pictures than I used to as a small reminder of all the random places I've been but I know for every world and moment I've taken a picture there are dozens or hundreds that remain only in my slowly fading memory. Sorry for blog posting. If you've got a picture of a memory from somewhere I'd enjoy seeing or reading about it. I'll get off my soap box now, have a good day anon.

PLAY COHENS FATE

It's a coop/solo turn based rpg/adventure game, but after you finish it once, it opens up into a quite deep and interesting puzzle game.

Pretty long and complicated, but very cool. You will need a few evenings to actually solve it. It's knowledge based, so you can drop in/drop out, you'll have to form a stable party and do a playthrough together.

Also any more info and any screenshot is basically a spoiler, it kinda feels like Outer Wilds in this regard

Sadly true, though Contractors has better modding and the best game mode domination (three control points). Hopefully their mobilised update comes out soon (already been pushed back a week) which should add some cooler stuff along with more battlefield like gameplay including vehicles. Regarding Contractors Showdown it's basically dead, they're adding AI bots to try and fill out the meagre lobbies. It was played a bit in the thread during the open beta but that was because it was free and only occurred on weekends so it focused people. Vail has numbers due to crossplay with standalone along with a recent free-to-play offering for access to the hub area, though it suffers the screaming kid problem during children's play time. Breachers gets played occasionally if you're looking for something similar to rainbow six though otherwise can be a bit thin on the ground players wise. If you're looking for any singleplayer/co-op shooter experiences, try out Into the Radius (Stalker-like), Crossfire: Sierra Squad (arcadey military shooter with a campaign) and The Light Brigade (Rougelike with WW1 weapons and magic). VR ports of your favourite shooters can work pretty well too (though you'd probably need to put effort into gathering players like with Q3A). An easy recommendation is Half Life 2 VR (along with the episodes), which is free if you own the base game. It is easily the best way to experience Half Life 2 and I'm saddened it doesn't come with a VR version of deathmatch that we could all play.

Metacity Patrol also just got an update. Now you can pimp your aircar some more with glass panels in floor, NPCs have more variation and aircar stabilisation can be turned off. But most importantly - there's now story missions with some world lore and building interiors. That means that there's some 80 buildings around the city you can just land on and explore with chance of random evidence or synth in each of ten floors. Oh and UI got a bit of facelift.

Anyone got a solution for VD users experiencing hangups when first joining a large vrchat instance? VD drops while downloading everyones avatars and i get 'VRChat has timed out" or such once the connection picks back up. All good once it retries but still, obnoxious.

I wouldn't expect that to be a VD-specific issue.
VD is just emulating an oculus headset, and keeps doing even if you completely quit out of VD, so your problem is likely between your PC and VRChat's servers.
It's not uncommon for high network traffic to cause otherwise stable networks to shit themselves, spiking pings and dropping packets. I would check for high pings and packet loss between your PC and the router first, then PC an external server ( e.g. 1.1.1.1 ) second, both during normal use and high load. See if anything is less than ideal.

I didn't invent it. But it was incompatible with the rave map at first. I managed to understand it almost immediately how it worked and managed to fix it for our map. That much I can be proud of. I had to fix how the toggles and post-processing of the system works

Orenjii helped me out on figuring out the OBS side for recording
Steve was our lab assistant. It was so fun to do a week before the event. We were hammering on it for 4 hrs on how to get it to work for the map

Basically the system is like this:
6 cameras capturing diffuse and depth map.
2 perpendicular cameras using custom post processing at ortographic view to get x,y,z data.
Compiled into a single texture sent through stream
Only the guy doing the recording gets hit by the performance reduction fps (Orenjii)
Everyone else has no fps reduction

was just going to pop in and check it out. I bought OG contractors because they were talking about the update that got pushed back.
I expected the mods to be really janky but I was shocked.
ended up in a lobby for 3 hours running around saying

Yes, it's either taking damage or a suppression effect that's always been in the game. I don't think you can turn it off and the graphics settings for the PCVR version were gutted when the game got ported to Quest.
Half of the options seem to do nothing and things like the LODs used to be much better than they are. The best example of the latter is how some vanilla pistols like the 1911 now have unusable ironsights because they swap to a lower LOD at arms length.

I have 9 Axis trackers, and I'm going to try to use them in the Trance Vibration mode for Rez Infinite tonight. What are you guys getting up to?

I now have almost 3 hours of Metacity Patrol footage recorded, most of it being comfy in the streets. The new UI is bit of meh, the large popup is annoying but I get that the single line of text in corner of screen was easy to miss.
Exploring the buildings is the real fun in this update, finding random pickups, few credits and getting into surprise gunfights in comfy interiors is nice. It also doesn't seem to be instanced at all, the buildings are part of the upper city and you can watch the traffic and stuff. NPCs now have varied clothing and look less uniform and holy shit does it make the streets feel more alive. At this point this blows LOW-FI out of the water in every regard. Honestly even graphically, LOW-FI feels like pile of polished asset store shit glued together while Metacity looks and feels like Deus Ex, lowpoly and lowres but actually original and artistically coherent.
